Love : Fruit Of The Spirit

Galatians 5:22-23

Text: Galatians 5:22-23 (NIV)

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.”

Introduction:

If you’ve ever had a good peach, you know you can’t fake it. A real, juicy peach has a flavor that’s unmistakable. That’s how love works when the Holy Spirit is growing it in us. It’s not the fake, waxy fruit in the grocery store window—this is the real deal: Spirit-grown, Jesus-shaped, neighbor-loving, enemy-forgiving love.

And here’s the thing—love isn’t just a slice of the fruit of the Spirit. It’s the whole flavor. It’s the secret sauce. It’s the foundation of all the other fruit. Without love, the rest of the list goes sour.

Point 1: Love Comes from the Spirit, Not from Self

You don’t manufacture true love by sheer willpower. If we could, the world would be a whole lot nicer, and family gatherings would be drama-free.

Paul says this love is fruit—meaning it grows naturally when we stay connected to the Vine, who is Jesus (John 15:5). You don’t see an apple tree grunting to pop out fruit—it just happens when it’s rooted right. So when we’re rooted in Jesus, love starts to show up in our lives: patient love, sacrificial love, inconvenient love.

Point 2: Love Is More Than a Feeling—It’s a Choice

Sometimes love feels like butterflies. Other times, it feels like doing the dishes when you’re dead tired, or forgiving someone who didn’t even say “sorry.”

1 Corinthians 13 tells us what love does:

“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud…” Notice it doesn’t say love feels patient—it is patient.

Jesus didn’t just feel love for us—He acted on it. He laid down His life, not when we were lovable, but when we were a mess. That’s the kind of love the Spirit grows in us.

Point 3: Love Is Our Greatest Witness

Want to show people Jesus? Don’t just carry a Bible—carry love. Jesus said in John 13:35, “By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

Love is our Christian ID badge. Not our bumper stickers. Not our playlists. But how we love the hard-to-love people. The grumpy boss. The annoying neighbor. The family member who always needs one more favor.

Love like that? That’s not natural. That’s supernatural. That’s Spirit-filled love.

Conclusion:

If you want to bear the fruit of the Spirit, start by asking the Gardener to do His work in you. You don’t have to force it—you just have to abide. Stay close to Jesus, and His love will flow through you like sunlight through the leaves.

The world is desperate for real love. Let’s show them what it looks like.

Closing Prayer:

Heavenly Father, Thank You for loving us with a love that never fails. We ask that Your Spirit would grow that same love in us—not just for those who are easy to love, but for everyone You place in our path. Teach us to love like Jesus: deeply, sacrificially, and unconditionally. Let our lives be living proof of Your presence in us. In Jesus’ name we pray, amen.
