Wiping Away Every Tear

Revelation 21:4

Scripture: Revelation 21:4 - “He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”

Introduction

Revelation 21:4 is one of the most comforting verses in Scripture, offering a glimpse into the glorious future that awaits believers. In a world filled with sorrow, suffering, and loss, this promise from God reminds us that the day is coming when all pain will cease, and all tears will be wiped away. What does this verse tell us about the hope we have in Christ and the future He promises?

In this sermon, we will explore three key truths found in this verse:

  1. The End of Suffering
  2. The Presence of God’s Comfort
  3. The Promise of New Life

1. The End of Suffering

“He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain.”

  • The Reality of Suffering:
    • Death, mourning, crying, and pain are all a part of the human experience in this broken world. From sickness to loss, from tragedy to heartache, we live in a world marked by suffering.
    • The Bible does not shy away from this reality. Romans 8:22 tells us that the whole creation groans as it waits for redemption.
  • A New Reality:
    • Revelation 21:4 promises that this suffering will come to an end. When Christ returns, He will remove all sorrow and pain forever.
    • There will be no more death—death, the great enemy, will be defeated once and for all (1 Corinthians 15:26).
    • No more mourning—there will be no more funerals, no more grief, no more goodbyes.
    • No more crying—our tears will be wiped away. Every sorrow will be gone.
    • No more pain—no physical or emotional pain will remain. This is the ultimate healing.

2. The Presence of God’s Comfort

“He will wipe every tear from their eyes.”

  • God Himself Will Comfort Us:
    • The most beautiful part of this verse is that it tells us that God Himself will wipe away our tears. It’s not an angel or a messenger, it is God, in His tender love, who will comfort us.
    • God will personally heal every wound, dry every tear, and bring lasting peace to every heart.
    • Isaiah 40:1 speaks of God’s heart of comfort: “Comfort, comfort my people,” says your God. In eternity, God will show the fullest expression of this comfort.
  • God’s Compassion is Ever-Present:
    • While this promise is ultimately for the future, we can experience God’s comfort now. In Psalm 34:18, we are reminded that “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”

3. The Promise of New Life

“For the old order of things has passed away.”

  • A New Heaven and a New Earth:
    • This verse points forward to the new creation that God has promised us. Revelation 21:1 tells us that there will be a new heaven and a new earth.
    • This will be a place where there is no more sin, no more corruption, no more decay. Everything will be made new and perfect, just as God intended.
    • Revelation 22:3 tells us that in this new world, there will be no more curse. The reign of God will be fully realized, and His people will dwell with Him forever.
  • Life Eternal with God:
    • The promise of Revelation 21:4 is the eternal life that we will experience in the presence of God. There will be no more separation, no more longing, no more struggle. We will live with God, fully experiencing His love, His peace, and His joy.
    • The new life we receive in Christ begins now but will be fully realized in eternity. Romans 8:18 tells us that the glory that will be revealed to us far outweighs the sufferings of this present time.

Conclusion

Revelation 21:4 paints a picture of a future without pain, where all suffering is gone and God’s eternal comfort fills the hearts of His people. For those of us who are going through suffering today, this verse provides hope that one day, the trials we face will come to an end. But it also challenges us to hold on to God’s promises and to live with a focus on the future hope that He has given us in Christ.

  • Are you suffering today? Know that God sees you, He cares for you, and one day, He will make all things new.
  • Are you longing for this future reality? Let this promise motivate you to keep going, to press on, and to live in the light of the hope we have in Christ.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the hope we have in Revelation 21:4. We look forward to the day when You will wipe every tear from our eyes, and all pain and suffering will be gone forever. In the midst of our trials, help us to trust in Your promises, knowing that You are with us now and that a glorious future awaits us with You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
