Freely You Have Received, Freely Give
Matthew 10:8
Key Text:
“Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, drive out demons. Freely you have received, freely give.” - Matthew 10:8
Introduction:
In Matthew 10:8, Jesus is instructing His disciples as He sends them out to preach the Kingdom of God. He gives them authority to heal, deliver, and minister to others. But He also reminds them of an important principle: “Freely you have received, freely give.”
This verse teaches us three key truths:
- God’s Gifts Are Freely Given
- We Are Called to Serve Others
- Giving Reflects the Heart of God
1. God’s Gifts Are Freely Given
Everything we have—salvation, forgiveness, grace, and even spiritual gifts—comes from God as a free gift.
- Salvation is a gift - “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith… it is the gift of God—not by works.” (Ephesians 2:8-9)
- God blesses us freely - He does not charge us for His love, mercy, or power.
- We did nothing to earn His grace - Since we received freely, we must not hoard or withhold it from others.
Application: Remember that all we have is a gift from God—we should not take it for granted. How can we cultivate a heart of gratitude for God's blessings?
2. We Are Called to Serve Others
Jesus empowered His disciples to go and serve—healing, delivering, and ministering to those in need. He calls us to do the same.
- We are blessed to be a blessing - God gives us spiritual and material blessings so that we can help others.
- Our calling is to give, not just receive - The Christian life is about serving, loving, and giving, not just receiving blessings.
- When we give, we reflect Jesus - He gave His time, His healing, and ultimately His life for us.
Application: Who in your life needs your help, encouragement, or generosity? How can you use what God has given you to bless others? Are there specific needs in our church or community that we can meet?
3. Giving Reflects the Heart of God
God is a generous giver. Everything about Him—His grace, love, and power—is poured out without limit. When we give freely, we reflect His heart.
- Giving strengthens our faith - When we trust God and give freely, we grow in dependence on Him.
- Giving brings joy - Jesus said, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” (Acts 20:35)
- Giving is a form of worship - When we give to others, we are honoring God.
Application: Be generous with your time, resources, and love, knowing that God will always provide for you. How can we overcome selfishness and cultivate a heart of generosity?
Conclusion:
Jesus calls us to give as we have received. Whether it’s our talents, time, finances, or love, we must freely share what God has given us. As we give, we reflect God’s heart and fulfill His purpose for our lives.
Reflection Questions:
- What has God given you that you can share with others?
- Are you holding onto something that God wants you to give freely?
- How can you serve and bless others this week?
Closing Prayer:
Lord, thank You for freely giving us Your love, grace, and blessings. Help us to be generous in serving and giving to others. Teach us to reflect Your heart by freely sharing what we have received. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
