The Son of God and The Son of Man

Matthew 26:63–64

Text: Matthew 26:63–64 “The high priest said to him, ‘Tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God.’ Jesus said… ‘You will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power and coming on the clouds of heaven.’”

Introduction Scripture gives Jesus many titles—Wonderful Counselor, Prince of Peace, Lamb of God. But two of the most profound are Son of Man and Son of God.

  • Son of God emphasizes His divinity.
  • Son of Man emphasizes His humanity. Together they reveal this truth: Jesus is fully God and fully man. To see only one side is to miss the fullness of who He is.

Point 1: The Son of Man — His Identification With Us “Son of Man” was Jesus’ most-used title for Himself—over 80 times.

  • It shows His humanity.

    • He was hungry, tired, thirsty.
    • He wept at Lazarus’ tomb.
    • He faced temptation.
    • Hebrews 4:15: He was “tempted in every way, yet without sin.”
    • He knows what it feels like to be human.
  • It shows His humility.

    • Daniel 7 speaks of the “Son of Man” receiving glory and authority.
    • Jesus, the King of heaven, chose a title tied to frailty and humanity.
  • It shows His mission.

    • Luke 19:10: “The Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”
    • He didn’t stay distant—He walked among us.

Point 2: The Son of God — His Authority Over Us Son of Man reveals His humanity, Son of God reveals His deity.

  • Affirmed at His baptism.

    • “This is My beloved Son…” (Matthew 3:17).
  • Displayed in His miracles.

    • Only God can calm storms, forgive sins, heal sickness, and raise the dead.
    • Every miracle declared His identity.
  • Proven in His resurrection.

    • Romans 1:4: He was “declared to be the Son of God… by His resurrection.”
    • Son of Man took Him to the cross, Son of God raised Him from the grave.

Point 3: The Two Titles Together — The Bridge Between Heaven and Earth When asked if He was the Son of God, Jesus answered using “Son of Man.”

  • He is both—Heaven’s Son and humanity’s brother.
  • As Son of Man, He understands us.
  • As Son of God, He saves us.
  • If He were only Son of Man, He could sympathize but not save.
  • If He were only Son of God, He could save but not sympathize. Because He is both, He is the perfect Mediator.

Conclusion When you pray, you pray to the Son of God with power to answer. When you cry, you cry to the Son of Man who knows your pain. And when you worship, you worship the One who is both—fully God, fully man, forever Lord.

Closing Prayer Lord Jesus, thank You for being both Son of Man and Son of God. Thank You for walking in our humanity, carrying our pain, and bearing our sin. Thank You for being the eternal Son of God with power to forgive, heal, and save. Help us trust You as both our compassionate friend and our sovereign Lord. In Your name, Amen.
