Craving Spiritual Milk

1 Peter 2:2

Scripture: 1 Peter 2:2 (NIV)

“Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation.”

Introduction

When a newborn baby is hungry, nothing else will satisfy except milk. It is essential for growth, nourishment, and survival. In the same way, Peter encourages believers to crave pure spiritual milk—God’s Word—so that we may grow in our faith and mature in Christ.

Just as physical growth requires proper nutrition, spiritual growth requires feeding on God’s truth. Today, we will explore what it means to crave spiritual milk, how it helps us grow, and why it is necessary for our spiritual maturity.

1. The Need for Spiritual Nourishment

  • Peter compares believers to newborn babies, emphasizing that just as babies instinctively desire milk, we should have a deep longing for God’s Word.
  • Milk provides nourishment, strength, and immunity to a baby. Likewise, God’s Word sustains our spiritual lives and protects us from deception.
  • Jesus said in Matthew 4:4, “Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.” Just as physical food is necessary for survival, God’s Word is necessary for our spiritual well-being.

Reflection: Are you spiritually hungry for God’s truth, or are you filling yourself with things that do not satisfy?

2. The Purity of Spiritual Milk

  • Peter describes this milk as pure, meaning it is untainted and free from corruption.
  • The world offers many philosophies, opinions, and distractions that can pollute our faith. But the Word of God is pure, unchanging, and life-giving.
  • Psalm 119:103 says, “How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth!”
  • Just as a baby rejects spoiled milk, we must reject teachings and influences that contradict God’s truth.

Reflection: Are you feeding on the pure Word of God, or are you allowing the world’s influences to shape your beliefs?

3. Growing in Salvation

  • The purpose of craving spiritual milk is to grow up in our salvation—to mature in our faith and become more like Christ.
  • Salvation is not just a one-time event but a continuous process of growth.
  • Hebrews 5:12-14 speaks about moving from milk to solid food, meaning that as we grow, we should develop deeper understanding and stronger faith.
  • If we neglect God’s Word, we remain spiritually weak and immature. But when we feed on His truth daily, we grow in wisdom, strength, and godliness.

Reflection: Are you growing in your spiritual life, or have you remained stagnant?

4. Developing a Deeper Hunger for God

  • Many believers struggle with spiritual hunger because they have filled their lives with worldly distractions.
  • To increase our craving for God’s Word, we must:
    • Spend time in Scripture daily (Psalm 1:2).
    • Pray for a deeper hunger (Psalm 42:1).
    • Remove spiritual junk food—anything that hinders our walk with Christ (Hebrews 12:1).
  • The more we taste and experience God’s goodness, the more we will crave His presence and truth.

Reflection: Are you making room in your life for God’s Word, or is your appetite being dulled by other things?

Conclusion

Peter urges us to crave pure spiritual milk so that we may grow in our salvation. Just as a baby depends on milk to grow, we must depend on God’s Word to develop spiritually.

Let us examine our hearts and ask: Do I truly hunger for God’s truth? If not, let us pray for a renewed desire and commit to feeding on His Word daily.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for giving us Your Word as spiritual nourishment. Help us to hunger for Your truth and grow in our salvation. Remove anything that dulls our appetite for You, and fill us with a desire to know You more. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
