Like a Roaring Lion

1 Peter 5:8

Scripture: 1 Peter 5:8 (NIV)

“Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.”

Introduction

The Bible warns us that we have a real enemy, the devil, who seeks to destroy our faith. However, it’s important to notice Peter’s choice of words: the devil prowls around like a roaring lion. This means he is not actually a lion, but he imitates one. Today, we will explore the significance of the word “like” in this passage and how it reveals the true nature of the enemy’s tactics.

1. The Devil is a Deceiver, Not a True Lion

  • Only Imitating Power - The devil is like a lion, but he is not the true Lion. The true Lion is Jesus Christ, who is called the Lion of Judah (Revelation 5:5). The enemy roars to create fear, but his power is limited.
  • A False Roar - Lions use their roar to intimidate and scatter their prey. Satan does the same by using fear, lies, and discouragement. However, his roar is only effective if we allow it to control us.
  • A Defeated Enemy - While he prowls like a lion, Jesus has already defeated him on the cross. Colossians 2:15 says, “And having disarmed the powers and authorities, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.”

Reflection: Are we allowing the devil’s roar to intimidate us, or are we standing firm in Christ’s victory?

2. The Devil is an Imitator, Not the King

  • Seeking to Replace Christ - Satan always tries to counterfeit what belongs to God. He wants to be seen as powerful, but only Jesus is King.
  • Lies vs. Truth - John 8:44 says the devil is the father of lies. He cannot create truth, only distort it.
  • Temporary Power - While the devil has some influence in this world, it is temporary. Jesus has the final authority.

Reflection: Are we focusing on the enemy’s false power, or are we trusting in the true power of God?

3. How to Stand Against the Enemy’s Attacks

  • Be Alert and Sober-Minded - Stay spiritually aware. The enemy looks for weakness, so we must be strong in prayer, scripture, and faith.
  • Resist Him with Faith - James 4:7 says, “Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” We resist him by standing firm in God’s Word.
  • Trust in God’s Protection - Psalm 91:9-10 reminds us that those who trust in God will find refuge in Him.

Reflection: What areas in our lives need strengthening so that we are not vulnerable to the enemy’s schemes?

Conclusion

The devil prowls like a roaring lion, but he is not the true Lion. Jesus Christ is our victorious King, and we do not have to fear the enemy. By staying alert, resisting his lies, and trusting in God’s power, we can walk in victory.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for reminding us that the devil is only an imitator, not the true Lion. Help us to stand firm in faith, resist his attacks, and trust in Your strength. We place our confidence in You, knowing that You are greater than any force that comes against us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
