Confidence in God’s Protection
Psalm 91:6-7
Main Text:
“Nor the pestilence that walks in darkness, nor the destruction that lays waste at noonday. A thousand may fall at your side, and ten thousand at your right hand, but it shall not come near you.” (Psalm 91:6-7, NKJV)
Introduction:
Psalm 91 is a powerful declaration of God’s protection over His people. Verses 6-7 remind us that no invisible danger or visible destruction can overcome those who trust in the Lord. These verses offer confidence that no matter what happens around us, God is our shield and protector. Today, we’ll explore three key truths: God’s protection from unseen dangers, His deliverance from visible destruction, and the assurance that His promises are personal and powerful.
1. Protection From Unseen Dangers
“Nor the pestilence that walks in darkness…”
Pestilence refers to deadly diseases and plagues—hidden threats that strike fear because they are beyond our control. Yet, for those who dwell in the secret place of the Most High, there is no need to fear.
- Biblical Examples:
- God protected the Israelites from the plagues in Egypt (Exodus 12:13).
- In the wilderness, He shielded His people from diseases (Deuteronomy 7:15).
- Jesus healed diseases, showing God’s power over afflictions (Matthew 4:23-24).
- Application:
- In times of sickness, trust God as your healer and protector (Psalm 103:3).
- When fear of the unknown grips you, remember God controls both seen and unseen.
- Cover yourself and your family in prayer, declaring God’s promises of protection.
Key Point: Even when dangers are invisible and unpredictable, we can rest in God’s unfailing protection.
2. Deliverance From Visible Destruction
“Nor the destruction that lays waste at noonday.”
Destruction at noonday symbolizes visible calamities—wars, disasters, and tragedies. Yet, God promises His people need not fear these attacks.
- Biblical Examples:
- Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were delivered from the fiery furnace (Daniel 3:25).
- Daniel was saved from the lion’s den (Daniel 6:22).
- Jesus calmed the storm, showing His authority over nature (Mark 4:39).
- Application:
- When trouble comes, remember God is your refuge and fortress (Psalm 91:2).
- Trust He will sustain you, even in chaos and uncertainty.
- Stand firm in the knowledge that God’s power is greater than any threat.
Key Point: No matter how visible or overwhelming the danger, God’s protection is greater.
3. Assurance of Personal Protection
“A thousand may fall at your side, and ten thousand at your right hand, but it shall not come near you.”
This verse highlights God’s personal care for His children. Even when destruction surrounds us, God promises it will not touch those who trust in Him.
- Biblical Examples:
- The Israelites were safe in Goshen while judgment fell on Egypt (Exodus 8:22-23).
- David stood unharmed against Goliath, protected by his faith (1 Samuel 17:45-47).
- Jesus walked unharmed through hostile crowds (Luke 4:30).
- Application:
- Declare God’s promises of protection over your life.
- Trust that God knows your name, sees your situation, and will keep you safe.
- Live confidently, knowing nothing can touch you without His permission (Job 1:10).
Key Point: God’s protection is personal, ensuring no harm can touch you unless it aligns with His perfect plan.
How to Experience God’s Protection:
- Dwell in His Presence: Stay close to God through prayer, worship, and His Word (Psalm 91:1).
- Declare His Promises: Speak God’s Word over your life, declaring, “He is my refuge.”
- Walk in Faith, Not Fear: Trust God is in control, even in dangerous or uncertain circumstances.
Conclusion:
Psalm 91:6-7 reminds us that God’s protection covers both invisible dangers and visible threats. Whether the danger comes in darkness or daylight, His promise stands: “It shall not come near you.” As we dwell in His presence and trust His unfailing love, we can live confidently under the shadow of the Almighty.
Closing Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for Your promise of protection and peace. Help us dwell in Your presence daily, trusting Your power to shield us from every danger. When fear tries to enter our hearts, remind us You are our refuge and fortress. Let Your peace guard our minds and Your presence cover our lives. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
