The Shield of Faith
Ephesians 6:16
Scripture: Ephesians 6:16
“In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.” - Ephesians 6:16 (NIV)
Introduction
Faith is one of the most powerful weapons in spiritual warfare. In Ephesians 6:16, Paul tells believers to take up the Shield of Faith, which protects us from the enemy’s attacks. Just as a Roman soldier’s shield was essential for defense, our faith in God is crucial for standing against Satan’s schemes.
Today, we will explore:
- What is the Shield of Faith?
- Why Do We Need It?
- How Do We Take It Up?
1. What is the Shield of Faith?
Roman soldiers carried large, rectangular shields made of wood and covered with leather. These shields were designed to block arrows, swords, and other attacks.
Spiritually, the Shield of Faith represents our complete trust in God. It defends us against the devil’s lies, doubts, and temptations.
What is Faith?
- Hebrews 11:1 - “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.”
- Faith is trusting in God’s promises, even when we don’t see immediate results.
Faith in Action
- David vs. Goliath - David’s faith in God was his shield against fear (1 Samuel 17).
- Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego - Their faith protected them in the fiery furnace (Daniel 3).
- Jesus in the Storm - Faith kept the disciples secure even when waves raged (Mark 4:35-41).
Application: Are you holding onto faith in your battles, or are you letting doubt and fear take over?
2. Why Do We Need the Shield of Faith?
Paul warns that the enemy sends flaming arrows—attacks meant to destroy our confidence in God.
What Are Satan’s Flaming Arrows?
- Doubt - “Did God really say that?” (Genesis 3:1)
- Fear - “What if God doesn’t come through?” (Matthew 14:30)
- Temptation - “It won’t hurt just this once.” (James 1:14-15)
- Discouragement - “You’ll never be good enough.” (Revelation 12:10)
- Lies - “God doesn’t love you.” (John 8:44)
Faith Extinguishes These Attacks
- Psalm 28:7 - “The Lord is my strength and my shield, my heart trusts in him, and he helps me.”
- When we hold up the Shield of Faith, we block the enemy’s attacks and stand strong.
Application: Are you allowing doubt and fear to weaken your faith, or are you trusting in God’s promises?
3. How Do We Take Up the Shield of Faith?
-
Believe in God’s Word
- Romans 10:17 - “Faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.”
- Daily reading and meditating on Scripture strengthens our faith.
-
Trust in God’s Character
- Proverbs 3:5-6 - “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.”
- Even when life doesn’t make sense, we hold onto God’s faithfulness.
-
Walk in Obedience
- James 2:17 - “Faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.”
- Faith grows when we act on God’s commands, even when it’s difficult.
-
Strengthen Your Faith Through Prayer
- Mark 9:24 - “I believe, help my unbelief!”
- If our faith feels weak, we must ask God to strengthen it.
-
Stand Together with Other Believers
- Romans 1:12 - “That you and I may be mutually encouraged by each other’s faith.”
- Roman soldiers would link their shields together for stronger defense. Likewise, we must surround ourselves with strong believers.
Conclusion
The Shield of Faith is essential for victory in spiritual battles. It:
- Protects us from Satan’s lies, doubts, and temptations.
- Strengthens us to trust in God’s promises.
- Helps us stand firm in the face of trials.
Let us take up our Shield of Faith daily, trusting in God’s power, promises, and presence!
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for the Shield of Faith. Strengthen our trust in You, help us stand firm against the enemy’s attacks, and remind us that You are always faithful. May we walk in confidence, knowing that our faith in You is our greatest defense. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
