The Power of God’s Amazing Grace
Ephesians 2:8-9
Introduction
Few songs in history have touched as many hearts as Amazing Grace. Written by John Newton, a former slave trader turned preacher, this hymn is a powerful testimony of God’s transforming grace. The words remind us that no one is beyond redemption and that God’s grace is greater than all our sins.
Grace is one of the most beautiful and essential truths of the Christian faith. It is through grace that we are saved, sustained, and strengthened. Today, we will reflect on the message of Amazing Grace and what it teaches us about God’s love for us.
1. Grace Saves the Lost
“Amazing grace! How sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me! I once was lost, but now am found, was blind, but now I see.”
- The Bible tells us in Ephesians 2:8-9, “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.”
- John Newton, the author of this hymn, was once a wicked man involved in the slave trade, but God’s grace transformed his life.
- Just like Newton, we were once lost in sin, but God’s grace finds us, no matter how far we have strayed.
No one is beyond God’s reach. His amazing grace is available to all who call upon Him.
2. Grace Guides Us Through Life
“’Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, and grace my fears relieved, how precious did that grace appear the hour I first believed.”
- God’s grace does not just save us—it also teaches and sustains us. Titus 2:11-12 says, “For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age.”
- Grace teaches us to trust God, even in difficult times. It relieves our fears and gives us peace.
- When we first believe, we begin to see God’s grace working in every area of our lives.
Have you recognized God’s grace guiding you through trials and uncertainties?
3. Grace Protects and Leads Us Home
“Through many dangers, toils, and snares, I have already come, ’tis grace hath brought me safe thus far, and grace will lead me home.”
- The Christian journey is filled with trials, but God’s grace carries us through. 2 Corinthians 12:9 reminds us, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.”
- We will face hardships, but God’s grace will sustain us until we reach our eternal home.
- The final verse of Amazing Grace points to our eternal hope: “When we’ve been there ten thousand years, bright shining as the sun, we’ve no less days to sing God’s praise than when we first begun.”
Our ultimate destination is heaven, where we will fully experience the glory of God’s amazing grace.
