The Holy Spirit: Then and Now

John 14:16-17

Main Text:
“And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Advocate to help you and be with you forever—the Spirit of truth.” (John 14:16-17, NIV)

Introduction:
The Holy Spirit’s role has evolved from the Old Testament to the New Testament. In the Old Testament, the Spirit came upon individuals temporarily for specific tasks. In the New Testament, through Jesus’ work, the Spirit now dwells permanently within all believers. Understanding this shift helps us appreciate the privilege and power we have through the Holy Spirit today.

1. The Holy Spirit in the Old Testament—Temporary and Selective
In the Old Testament, the Holy Spirit came upon specific individuals for particular purposes.

  • Empowering Leaders: The Spirit empowered leaders like Moses, Joshua, and the judges (Numbers 11:25, Judges 6:34).
  • Anointing Kings: The Spirit anointed kings like Saul and David (1 Samuel 16:13-14).
  • Inspiring Prophets: The Spirit enabled prophets like Isaiah and Ezekiel to speak God’s words (2 Peter 1:21).
  • Skill for Specific Tasks: The Spirit gave craftsmen like Bezalel the ability to build the tabernacle (Exodus 31:2-5).

However, the Spirit’s presence could be withdrawn due to disobedience, as seen with King Saul (1 Samuel 16:14).

Key Point: In the Old Testament, the Holy Spirit was selective and temporary, coming upon individuals for specific tasks.

2. The Holy Spirit in the New Testament—Permanent and Universal
With Jesus’ resurrection and ascension, the Holy Spirit was poured out on all believers, fulfilling God’s promise to dwell within His people permanently.

  • The Promise of the Spirit: Jesus promised the Spirit as an Advocate and Comforter (John 14:16-17).
  • The Day of Pentecost: The Spirit was poured out on all believers in Acts 2, marking His permanent indwelling (Acts 2:1-4).
  • Universal Access: The Spirit is now available to all who believe, regardless of status, age, or gender (Acts 2:17-18).
  • Sealed and Secure: The Spirit seals believers, guaranteeing their eternal inheritance (Ephesians 1:13-14).

Key Point: In the New Testament, the Holy Spirit dwells permanently within every believer, empowering them to glorify God.

3. The Holy Spirit’s Role Today—Personal and Transformative
Today, the Holy Spirit actively guides, empowers, and transforms believers.

  • Convicting of Sin: The Spirit convicts the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment (John 16:8).
  • Empowering for Ministry: The Spirit gives spiritual gifts to build up the church (1 Corinthians 12:4-11).
  • Guiding and Teaching: The Spirit leads believers into truth and reminds them of Jesus’ words (John 16:13, John 14:26).
  • Producing Spiritual Fruit: The Spirit transforms believers’ character, producing love, joy, peace, and more (Galatians 5:22-23).
  • Interceding in Prayer: The Spirit helps believers pray when they don’t know what to say (Romans 8:26).

Key Point: The Holy Spirit is actively working in believers’ lives, guiding, empowering, and transforming them to reflect Christ.

4. The Significance of the Holy Spirit’s Permanent Presence
The shift from temporary to permanent indwelling demonstrates God’s grace. Through Christ, we have direct access to God’s presence within us.

  • Confidence in God’s Presence: The Spirit is our constant Companion (Hebrews 13:5).
  • Empowered to Overcome Sin: The Spirit enables us to resist temptation and live victoriously (Romans 8:13).
  • Boldness to Share the Gospel: The Spirit gives boldness and wisdom to witness (Acts 1:8).
  • Living as God’s Temple: Our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, calling us to honor God (1 Corinthians 6:19-20).

Key Point: The Holy Spirit’s permanent presence empowers us to live confidently, victoriously, and purposefully as God’s children.

Conclusion:
The Holy Spirit’s role has shifted from temporary empowerment in the Old Testament to permanent indwelling in believers today. This transformation, made possible through Jesus, gives us constant access to God’s presence and power. Let us live each day aware of the Spirit within us, guiding, empowering, and transforming us to fulfill God’s purpose.

Closing Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of the Holy Spirit, who dwells within us and empowers us to live for You. Help us to be sensitive to His voice, obedient to His leading, and bold in sharing Your love with others. May we walk in the Spirit’s power, producing fruit that reflects Your character and advancing Your kingdom on earth. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
