The God of the Living

Matthew 22:32

Key Scripture:

“I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. He is not the God of the dead, but of the living.” - Matthew 22:32

Introduction:

In this passage, Jesus responds to the Sadducees, who denied the resurrection. They tried to challenge Him with a hypothetical question about marriage in the afterlife, but Jesus corrected their misunderstanding. He declared that God is “not the God of the dead, but of the living.”

This statement holds profound truths about who God is and the hope we have in Him. Today, we will explore:

  1. God’s Eternal Nature
  2. The Reality of Resurrection and Eternal Life
  3. Living in the Power of a Living God

1. God’s Eternal Nature

  • When God spoke to Moses at the burning bush (Exodus 3:6), He said, “I am the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.”
  • Though these patriarchs had died physically, they were still alive in God’s presence.
  • This shows that God is eternal and His relationship with His people never ends.

Application: Do we trust in God’s unchanging nature, knowing that He is always faithful?

2. The Reality of Resurrection and Eternal Life

  • Jesus used this verse to prove that there is life after death.
  • The Sadducees rejected the resurrection, but Jesus affirmed that death is not the end for those who belong to God.
  • John 11:25 says, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die.”

Application: Do we live with the assurance that we have eternal life in Christ?

3. Living in the Power of a Living God

  • Because God is alive, He is active in our lives today.
  • He hears our prayers, guides our steps, and strengthens us in times of trouble.
  • We are called to live with faith, hope, and purpose, knowing that we serve a living God.

Application: Are we living in faith, or do we sometimes act as if God is distant and inactive?

Conclusion:

Jesus reminds us that God is not the God of the dead, but of the living. We serve a God who is eternal, who promises resurrection, and who is actively involved in our lives today. Let us live each day with faith in His power and the hope of eternal life.

Reflection Questions:

  1. Do you truly believe in the resurrection and eternal life?
  2. How does knowing that God is the God of the living affect your daily faith?
  3. Are you living with the confidence that God is actively working in your life?

Closing Prayer:

Lord, we thank You that You are the God of the living. Strengthen our faith in Your eternal promises and help us to live with confidence in Your power. May we walk daily in the hope of resurrection and eternal life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
