Trusting God with What We Lack

1 Kings 18:33

Introduction:

In 1 Kings 18, we find Elijah in a dramatic confrontation with the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel. The land had suffered a three-year drought, leaving water in extreme scarcity. Yet, when preparing the altar for God’s demonstration of power, Elijah did something extraordinary—he poured precious water over the sacrifice.

This act was not wasteful but a powerful declaration of faith. Elijah showed that true trust in God requires surrendering even what we lack, believing that God can provide beyond our limitations.

I. Faith in the Face of Scarcity

  • The Context of Drought:
    • The people of Israel had been without rain for three years due to their disobedience and idolatry. Every drop of water was precious, making Elijah’s act even more significant.
    • Instead of hoarding or conserving, Elijah used what little water remained as an offering to God.
  • Application:
    • Often, we hold tightly to our resources—our time, finances, energy—because we fear running out.
    • Elijah teaches us that true faith gives to God first, even when it seems impractical.

II. The Power of Sacrificial Faith

  • Water on the Altar:
    • Elijah built the altar, arranged the wood, and laid the sacrifice. Then, he commanded that four large jars of water be poured over everything—three times!
    • The soaked altar eliminated any chance of human trickery, proving that only God’s fire could ignite it.
  • Application:
    • Sometimes, God asks us to surrender what we think we can’t afford to lose—our last bit of strength, our limited finances, or our comfort.
    • When we give sacrificially, God moves in miraculous ways, just as He sent fire from heaven to consume Elijah’s water-soaked offering.

III. God’s Response to Radical Trust

  • Fire Fell from Heaven:
    • After Elijah’s prayer, God answered with consuming fire, proving He alone is the true God.
    • This miracle led the people of Israel to repentance and restored God’s rightful place in their hearts.
  • Application:
    • When we trust God completely, even with our greatest needs, He responds in ways that demonstrate His power and faithfulness.
    • Whether in our finances, relationships, or personal struggles, God honors those who step out in faith and surrender to Him.

Conclusion: Giving to God What We Lack

Elijah’s decision to use the little water left during a drought was an act of profound trust. He showed that faith isn’t about holding onto what we have but offering it to God and expecting Him to act.

What are you holding onto today?

  • Is it fear of financial lack?
  • Is it time you feel you can’t afford to give?
  • Is it faith you struggle to surrender fully?

Like Elijah, may we have the boldness to trust God with what we lack, believing He will provide in ways beyond our imagination.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, we surrender our fears, our limitations, and our lack to You. Teach us to trust You fully, even when it seems impractical. Just as You answered Elijah’s faith with fire from heaven, may You move mightily in our lives when we step out in trust. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
