The Gift of Discomfort: How God Uses Relationships to Grow Us
Genesis 2:18
"The Upgrade Plan" — Why God Said 'It's Not Good for Man to Be Alone'
Scripture
Genesis 2:18 (NIV)
“The Lord God said, ‘It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.’”
Introduction
Let’s be honest — if it were up to most men, life would be incredibly simple.
A big screen TV, a fridge stocked with snacks, a chair that reclines, and a remote that never gets lost — that’s paradise.
Men are perfectly happy with four walls, Wi-Fi, and a solid pair of sweatpants.
But God, in His infinite wisdom, said:
“It is not good for man to be alone.”
And that’s when everything changed — for the better… and sometimes for the busier.
1. Man in His Natural Habitat
Men are simple creatures. If you walked into a bachelor’s apartment, you might find:
- One towel (used for everything)
- A couch older than time itself
- A collection of mismatched cups from fast food places
- A TV so big it makes the walls shake during football games
Truth is: Men don’t need much to survive.
If it wasn’t for women, most men would still be living like it’s a college dorm room.
2. The Woman — God’s Upgrade Plan
So God created Eve — and that’s when color came into Adam’s world.
It’s often the woman who enters a man’s life and says:
- “Let’s get some curtains that aren’t made out of old bed sheets.”
- “Maybe you shouldn’t hang your favorite sports jersey in the living room.”
- “Have you ever thought about eating something green that isn’t mold?”
She calls him out of his comfortable cave and into a better version of himself.
And thank God for it.
3. God Uses Discomfort to Grow Us
While we joke, there’s a deeper truth here:
God uses people — especially those close to us — to grow us.
It’s easy to be comfortable in isolation,
but we don’t grow there.
Growth happens in community, connection, and in the (sometimes not-so-gentle) nudges from those who love us.
Proverbs 27:17 —
“As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.”
And let’s be honest — sometimes that sharpening feels like sandpaper.
But it makes us better.
4. Balance: The Beauty of Partnership
- Men bring simplicity, strength, and steady vision.
- Women bring wisdom, beauty, and the courage to say,
“Let’s paint this place a color that isn’t ‘apartment beige.’”
Together, we reflect the full image of God.
Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 —
“Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor:
If either of them falls down, one can help the other up.”
Partnership — in marriage, friendship, or family — pulls us out of our small, self-centered world and into something bigger.
Conclusion
Yes, a man might be perfectly content with a recliner and a remote...
But God in His goodness sends someone — often a woman —
who says:
“Let’s dream a little bigger, live a little better, and stop eating off paper plates.”
So:
- Don’t resist the people God uses to challenge you.
- Thank God for them.
Because through them, we become the people God created us to be.
Closing Prayer
Father, thank You for the people You place in our lives who challenge us to grow, who lovingly drag us out of our comfort zones, and who help us see beyond ourselves. Help us to value those relationships, to embrace the growth they bring, and to be open to Your work through them. Bless our homes, our marriages, our friendships — and thank You, Lord, for the upgrades You send us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
