The Fourth Man in the Fire

Daniel 3:25

Key Text:

“He answered and said, Lo, I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire, and they have no hurt, and the form of the fourth is like the Son of God.” - Daniel 3:25

Introduction

The story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in the fiery furnace is one of the most powerful examples of faith and God’s deliverance in Scripture. These three men refused to bow to King Nebuchadnezzar’s golden image, choosing to obey God rather than man. Their obedience led them into a fiery trial, but God did not abandon them—He was right there in the fire with them!

This story reminds us that:

  1. Faith is tested in the fire.
  2. God is always with us in our trials.
  3. God delivers His people in His perfect way and time.

1. Faith is Tested in the Fire

  • Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego refused to bow to the king’s idol, knowing the consequence was death in the fiery furnace.
  • Daniel 3:17-18 - “If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us… But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods.”
  • True faith stands firm, even when obedience to God brings suffering.
  • James 1:3 - “The trying of your faith worketh patience.”

When we stand for God, we will face challenges—opposition, rejection, and trials. But we must remain steadfast, knowing God is greater than the fire.

2. God is With Us in the Fire

  • King Nebuchadnezzar expected the men to burn, but instead, he saw four men walking in the fire!
  • The fourth man was “like the Son of God.” This was a divine presence—Jesus Himself walking with them.
  • Isaiah 43:2 - “When thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned, neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.”

God does not always keep us from the fire, but He walks with us through it.

3. God Delivers in His Perfect Way

  • The fire had no power over them—not even the smell of smoke was on them (Daniel 3:27).
  • Sometimes God delivers us from the fire, sometimes through the fire, and sometimes by the fire.
  • Psalm 34:19 - “Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the Lord delivereth him out of them all.”

No matter the trial, God is able to deliver and bring glory to His name.

Conclusion

  • Are you in a fiery trial today? Know that you are not alone—Jesus is with you.
  • Stand firm in faith, even when tested.
  • Trust God’s timing for deliverance.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for being with us in every trial. Strengthen our faith, help us stand firm in obedience, and remind us that You are always in the fire with us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
