Grace Is Not a License to Sin —It’s Liberation from Sin
Romans 6:14
Text:
Romans 6:14 (NKJV)
“For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace.”
⸻
Introduction
Grace is one of the most powerful and liberating truths in the Bible. But sadly, grace is often misunderstood. Some think grace is God’s way of looking the other way when we sin—as if grace means we can do whatever we want because we’re already forgiven.
But Scripture tells a different story. Grace does not make sin safer. Grace makes freedom possible. God’s grace doesn’t give us permission to sin—it gives us power over it.
⸻
1. Grace Is Not a License—It’s Liberation
Paul addresses this confusion directly in Romans 6:1-2:
“Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it?”
Grace is not a license to keep sinning. It’s the death certificate for our old life.
If you’ve truly received grace, you can’t comfortably live in what Jesus died to free you from.

2. Grace Breaks the Power of Sin
“For sin shall not have dominion over you…” (Romans 6:14)
When we were under the law, sin ruled us. We couldn’t measure up. But under grace, Jesus breaks sin’s control.
This doesn’t mean we’ll never struggle—it means we’re no longer slaves. The chains are broken. We now can say no to sin because Christ lives in us.
Think of grace as the engine of a car—not the brakes. It doesn’t stop you from moving forward, it empowers you to move in the right direction.
⸻
3. Grace Trains Us for Holiness
“The grace of God… teaches us to say ‘No’ to ungodliness…” (Titus 2:11-12)
Grace isn’t just forgiving—it’s formative. It’s a teacher.
• It trains your desires.
• It reshapes your priorities.
• It leads you to look more like Jesus.
If your version of grace is pulling you deeper into compromise instead of calling you higher, it’s not God’s grace—it’s counterfeit.
⸻
4. Grace Produces Gratitude, Not Rebellion
When you realize what it cost Jesus to forgive you, you don’t run back into sin—you run toward holiness.
“You are not your own, you were bought at a price…” (1 Corinthians 6:19-20)
Grace creates worship, not excuses. You obey not because you’re trying to earn God’s love, but because you’re overwhelmed by it.
⸻
Conclusion
God’s grace is not soft on sin. It’s strong enough to overcome it.
Grace says:
• You are free—from guilt.
• You are free—from shame.
• You are free—from the power of sin.
But you are not free to go back to Egypt after God has delivered you. Grace didn’t bring you out just to leave you halfway. It brought you out to bring you in—into a life of victory, joy, and holiness.

Closing Prayer
Father, thank You for the grace that not only saves but sets us free.
Forgive us for the times we’ve taken grace for granted.
Help us to live lives that reflect the freedom and holiness that grace empowers.
Let our obedience be fueled by gratitude, not guilt.
And may we never forget the price Jesus paid to purchase our freedom.
In His name we pray, Amen.
