The Breastplate of Righteousness
Ephesians 6:14
Scripture: Ephesians 6:14
“Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place.” - Ephesians 6:14 (NIV)
Introduction
In our spiritual battle against the enemy, God provides us with His armor for protection. One of the most crucial pieces is the Breastplate of Righteousness. Just as a breastplate protects a soldier’s vital organs, particularly the heart, righteousness guards our spiritual lives from the attacks of the enemy.
Today, we will explore:
- What is the Breastplate of Righteousness?
- Why Do We Need It?
- How Do We Put It On?
1. What is the Breastplate of Righteousness?
In biblical times, a soldier’s breastplate was a metal shield that protected his chest, heart, and vital organs from fatal attacks.
Spiritually, the Breastplate of Righteousness protects our hearts from the enemy’s accusations, temptations, and lies.
Two Types of Righteousness
- Imputed Righteousness - Christ’s Righteousness
- 2 Corinthians 5:21 - “God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”
- We are not saved by our own righteousness but by Christ’s righteousness.
- When we accept Jesus, we are clothed in His righteousness, making us right with God.
- Practical Righteousness - Living a Holy Life
- 1 Peter 1:15-16 - “Be holy, because I am holy.”
- Though we are saved by grace, we must also live righteously by obeying God’s commands.
- This protects us from sin’s consequences and the enemy’s attacks.
Application: Have you fully accepted Christ’s righteousness, and are you striving to live a holy life?
2. Why Do We Need the Breastplate of Righteousness?
The enemy wants to attack our hearts, which represent our emotions, thoughts, and desires.
Satan’s Attacks Against the Heart
- Accusations - He reminds us of past sins to make us feel unworthy (Revelation 12:10).
- Temptations - He tries to lure us into sinful living (James 1:14-15).
- Doubt and Guilt - He makes us question if God really loves us.
How Righteousness Protects Us
- Romans 8:1 - “There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”
- When we wear the Breastplate of Righteousness:
- We stand firm against guilt and shame.
- We reject sinful temptations.
- We live in confidence and freedom as God’s children.
Application: Are you allowing the enemy’s accusations to discourage you, or are you standing firm in God’s righteousness?
3. How Do We Put on the Breastplate of Righteousness?
-
Trust in Christ’s Righteousness
- Stop trying to earn salvation—receive it by faith.
- Philippians 3:9 - “Not having a righteousness of my own… but that which is through faith in Christ.”
-
Live in Obedience to God
- 1 John 3:7 - “The one who does what is right is righteous.”
- Confess sins, walk in purity, and avoid things that lead to unrighteousness.
-
Guard Your Heart Daily
- Proverbs 4:23 - “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”
- Fill your heart with God’s Word, prayer, and worship.
Conclusion
The Breastplate of Righteousness is essential for our spiritual protection. It:
- Covers us with Christ’s righteousness through salvation.
- Guards us from the enemy’s attacks of sin, doubt, and guilt.
- Strengthens us to live holy and obedient lives.
Let us put on the Breastplate of Righteousness daily, standing firm in God’s truth and living in His holiness.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for giving us the Breastplate of Righteousness. Help us to trust in Christ’s righteousness and walk in holiness. Guard our hearts from sin, guilt, and temptation. May we stand firm in Your truth and live lives that honor You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
