The Blessing of Generosity
Proverbs 11:24-25
Text: Proverbs 11:24-25 (NIV) “One person gives freely, yet gains even more, another withholds unduly, but comes to poverty. A generous person will prosper, whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.”
Introduction
The world often teaches that to gain more, we must hold tightly to what we have. However, Proverbs 11:24-25 presents a different principle: generosity leads to abundance, while selfishness leads to lack. This passage teaches us that God blesses those who give freely and that generosity is a key to true prosperity.
Today, we will explore three key lessons from these verses:
- Generosity Leads to Increase
- Selfishness Leads to Lack
- Blessing Others Brings Blessings in Return
I. Generosity Leads to Increase
“One person gives freely, yet gains even more…”
The Bible teaches that when we give with an open heart, God blesses us abundantly. Generosity is not just about money—it includes our time, love, kindness, and resources. The more we pour into the lives of others, the more God pours into ours.
Biblical Example: The widow of Zarephath (1 Kings 17:8-16) gave her last bit of flour and oil to feed the prophet Elijah. Because of her faith and generosity, God miraculously provided for her and her son throughout the famine.
Application: Are we holding tightly to what we have, or are we willing to bless others? When we give, we open ourselves up to God’s supernatural provision.
II. Selfishness Leads to Lack
“Another withholds unduly, but comes to poverty.”
Hoarding and greed often lead to spiritual and even financial poverty. When we refuse to give, we close the door to God’s blessings. The world teaches us to keep and accumulate, but God’s wisdom teaches us that true wealth comes through giving.
Biblical Example: The rich fool in Luke 12:16-21 stored up wealth for himself but was called a fool because he did not use his riches for God’s purposes. His greed led to his downfall.
Application: Are we trusting in our own resources or in God’s provision? When we give freely, we demonstrate our faith that God will continue to provide for us.
III. Blessing Others Brings Blessings in Return
“A generous person will prosper, whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.”
When we bless others, we ourselves are blessed. God’s kingdom operates on the principle of sowing and reaping (2 Corinthians 9:6). The more we give, the more we receive—not just materially, but also in joy, peace, and spiritual fulfillment.
Biblical Example: In Acts 20:35, Paul reminds us of Jesus’ words: “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” The early church practiced radical generosity, and as a result, they experienced God’s provision and favor.
Application: Are we actively looking for ways to refresh and bless others? Whether through financial giving, acts of kindness, or words of encouragement, our generosity brings life to others and joy to ourselves.
Conclusion
Proverbs 11:24-25 challenges us to adopt a lifestyle of generosity. When we give freely, we open the door for God’s blessings. When we withhold, we risk losing what we have. And when we refresh others, we ourselves are refreshed.
Let us choose to be generous in all areas of life—knowing that God is our ultimate provider. When we give with open hearts, we will experience His abundant blessings in return.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for teaching us the power of generosity. Help us to give freely, trust in Your provision, and seek opportunities to bless others. May our lives reflect Your kindness and grace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
