Seeking First the Kingdom: Prioritizing God and Trusting His Provision*

Matthew 6:33-34

Key Text:

“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” - Matthew 6:33-34

Introduction:

In a world filled with anxiety about the future, Jesus gives us a simple yet profound command: Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and He will provide for our needs. Instead of being consumed by worry, we are called to trust in God’s provision and focus on what truly matters—His kingdom.

Today, we will explore:

  1. What It Means to Seek First the Kingdom of God
  2. God’s Promise of Provision
  3. Trusting God Instead of Worrying

1. What It Means to Seek First the Kingdom of God

Jesus instructs us to make the kingdom of God our top priority. But what does that mean?

  • Seeking God’s Rule in Our Lives - The kingdom of God refers to His rule and reign. To seek it means to align our lives with His will.
  • Pursuing Righteousness - Jesus says to seek His righteousness, meaning we should strive to live holy and obedient lives.
  • Putting Spiritual Priorities Over Earthly Concerns - Many people focus on wealth, success, and material gain, but Jesus calls us to prioritize God’s will, His Word, and His work.

Application: Ask yourself, “What comes first in my life—God’s kingdom or my own desires?” Seeking God’s kingdom means placing Him above everything else. How can we practically demonstrate that God's kingdom is our top priority?

2. God’s Promise of Provision

Jesus assures us that when we seek God first, “all these things will be given to you as well.” What are “these things”? In the previous verses (Matthew 6:25-32), Jesus speaks about food, clothing, and daily needs.

  • God Cares for His Children - Just as He feeds the birds and clothes the flowers, He will provide for us.
  • God Knows What We Need - We often stress about things God has already planned to take care of.
  • Provision Follows Obedience - When we put God first, He takes care of everything else (Psalm 37:25).

Application: Instead of striving after material things, we should trust that God will provide as we walk in obedience. How can we cultivate a deeper trust in God's provision and release our anxieties about material needs?

3. Trusting God Instead of Worrying

Jesus concludes by saying, “Do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”

  • Worry Accomplishes Nothing - It does not change the future but steals our peace today.
  • God Wants Us to Live in Daily Trust - Just as Israel received manna each day in the wilderness (Exodus 16), we are called to trust God one day at a time.
  • Faith Over Fear - Worry is a sign that we are relying on ourselves instead of God. Jesus calls us to trust Him fully.

Application: Instead of being anxious about the future, we should live by faith and trust in God’s daily provision. What are some practical steps we can take to overcome worry and anxiety, and choose faith instead?

Conclusion:

Jesus’ command is simple: Seek God first, and trust Him with everything else. When we make His kingdom our priority, He promises to take care of our needs. Instead of worrying, we are called to live each day in faith, knowing that God is in control.

Reflection Questions:

  1. What areas of your life do you need to surrender to God’s kingdom?
  2. Are you trusting God for your needs, or are you constantly worrying?
  3. How can you live with greater faith and reliance on God each day?

Closing Prayer:

Lord, help us to seek Your kingdom above all else. Teach us to trust You for our daily needs and to live without fear of the future. Strengthen our faith so that we may walk in obedience and peace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
