Saved by Grace Through Faith

Ephesians 2:8-9

Scripture: “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing, it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.” - Ephesians 2:8-9 (ESV)

Introduction Salvation is a gift from God, not something we earn. In a world driven by achievement, this truth from Ephesians 2:8-9 stands in stark contrast. Let’s explore what these verses teach us about grace, faith, and salvation.

Salvation is by Grace (Verse 8) “For by grace you have been saved…”

  • Grace Defined: God’s unmerited favor, offering love, forgiveness, and eternal life.
  • God’s Initiative: Salvation is God’s choice, rooted in His love and mercy (Romans 5:8).
  • Unconditional Gift: Freely given, regardless of our past (Titus 3:5).
  • Application: Approach God with gratitude for His loving gift of salvation.

Salvation is Through Faith (Verse 8) “…you have been saved through faith.”

  • Faith Defined: Trust in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.
  • Not Earned: Faith is a response to God’s grace, not a work (John 3:16).
  • Union with Christ: Through faith, we are united with Christ and credited with His righteousness (Romans 3:22).
  • Application: Trust in Jesus’ work, not our own efforts, for salvation (John 14:6).

Salvation is Not Our Own Doing (Verse 9) “And this is not your own doing, it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.”

  • Not Based on Works: Good deeds and rituals cannot save us (Titus 3:5).
  • No Boasting: Salvation is God’s work, leaving no room for pride (Romans 3:27-28).
  • A Humbling Truth: We are saved by grace through faith, relying on God’s work.
  • Application: Live with humility and gratitude, boasting only in the Lord (Jeremiah 9:24).

The Purpose of Salvation - To Glorify God

  • Reflect God’s Greatness: Salvation showcases God’s mercy and power.
  • Live for God’s Glory: Our lives should reflect gratitude and obedience (Romans 12:1).
  • Application: Share God’s love and glorify Him in all we do.

Conclusion Ephesians 2:8-9 reminds us that salvation is a gift—by grace, through faith, and not by works. This truth calls us to gratitude, humility, and obedience, giving all glory to God.

Closing Prayer Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of salvation. Help us to trust in Your work and live for Your glory. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
