Redemption Through His Blood
Ephesians 1:7
Scripture:
“In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace.” - Ephesians 1:7 (ESV)
Introduction
Redemption is a powerful word in the Christian faith. It speaks to the act of being bought back from slavery, being freed from the bonds of sin, and restored to a right relationship with God. In Ephesians 1:7, Paul reveals to us that redemption is through the blood of Jesus Christ. This verse holds profound significance for believers, as it reminds us of the cost of our salvation, the depth of God’s love, and the immeasurable grace we have received.
Today, let’s reflect on the nature of redemption, the price of redemption, and the purpose of redemption in Christ.
1. The Nature of Redemption - Freedom in Christ
Paul starts by saying, “In him we have redemption.” What does redemption mean for us?
- Redemption Means Freedom: The word “redemption” originally referred to the act of purchasing a slave’s freedom. We were slaves to sin, but through Christ’s work, we have been set free (Romans 6:22).
- We Were Helpless Without Christ: Before coming to Christ, we were spiritually enslaved to sin and death (Romans 3:23). We could not free ourselves, but Christ stepped in.
- In Christ, We Are Made New: In 2 Corinthians 5:17, Paul says, “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.” Redemption means that we are no longer bound by sin’s power but are now free to live according to God’s will.
2. The Price of Redemption - The Blood of Jesus
The second part of the verse says, “through his blood.” Redemption was not free, it cost Jesus His life.
- The Blood of Jesus: Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross is the ultimate price that was paid for our redemption. Hebrews 9:22 tells us, “Without the shedding of blood, there is no forgiveness of sins.”
- A Price We Could Not Pay: Our sin demanded justice, and the only way to satisfy God’s justice was through a perfect, sinless sacrifice. Jesus, God’s Son, took our place, paying the price for our redemption (1 Peter 1:18-19).
- God’s Love Displayed: Romans 5:8 says, “But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” The blood of Christ demonstrates the incredible depth of God’s love for humanity.
3. The Purpose of Redemption - Forgiveness and Grace
Why did God redeem us? Paul gives us the answer in the second half of the verse: “the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace.”
- Forgiveness of Our Trespasses: Our sins, our wrongdoings, have been forgiven. Colossians 2:13-14 says, “He forgave us all our trespasses, canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands.” Through Christ, all our sin has been erased.
- According to the Riches of His Grace: Redemption is not based on our worthiness but on God’s abundant grace. We did nothing to deserve forgiveness, yet God lavished it upon us because of His great love (Ephesians 2:8-9).
- A New Relationship with God: Through redemption, we are reconciled to God and brought into His family. We now have the privilege of calling God our Father (Romans 8:15).
4. Living in Light of Redemption
The truth of our redemption should change the way we live.
- Live in Gratitude: Every day, we should thank God for the immense cost of our redemption and live lives that honor Him (Romans 12:1).
- Live in Freedom: We are no longer slaves to sin, we are free to live as new creations in Christ, living according to the Spirit (Galatians 5:1).
- Live in Hope: Because of redemption, we have eternal hope. The forgiveness and grace we receive now are only a glimpse of the fullness we will experience in heaven (1 Peter 1:3-5).
Conclusion
Ephesians 1:7 reminds us that our redemption is a gift—not something we earned, but something given to us through the blood of Jesus Christ. We have been forgiven, freed, and made heirs to the promises of God.
How do we respond to such a great gift? We respond with gratitude, obedience, and praise, knowing that God has lavished His grace upon us and that we are no longer slaves but children of the Most High.
Closing Prayer
