Perfect Praise from Children
Matthew 21:16
Key Scripture:
“Do you hear what these children are saying?” they asked him. “Yes,” replied Jesus, “have you never read, ‘From the lips of children and infants you, Lord, have called forth your praise’?” - Matthew 21:16
Introduction:
In Matthew 21:16, Jesus responds to the religious leaders who were angered by children praising Him in the temple. They saw the children shouting, “Hosanna to the Son of David!” and wanted Jesus to silence them. However, Jesus affirmed their praise by quoting Psalm 8:2, showing that God welcomes pure and sincere worship from all, even little children.
This passage teaches us:
- The Power of Childlike Faith
- The Rejection of True Worship by the Proud
- The Kind of Worship That Pleases God
1. The Power of Childlike Faith
- Children worshipped Jesus freely without fear or doubt.
- They recognized Jesus as the Messiah, while the religious leaders rejected Him.
- Jesus reminds us that true faith is simple and sincere, just like a child’s faith (Matthew 18:3).
Application: Do we approach God with childlike faith, or do we let doubt and pride hinder our worship?
2. The Rejection of True Worship by the Proud
- The religious leaders were offended that children were worshipping Jesus.
- Their pride and spiritual blindness kept them from recognizing the truth.
- Many today still reject Jesus because of intellectual pride or hardened hearts.
Application: Are we humble enough to worship Jesus wholeheartedly, or do we let pride get in the way?
3. The Kind of Worship That Pleases God
- Sincere worship comes from the heart, not just the lips (John 4:23-24).
- God values purity in worship more than eloquence or religious traditions.
- Even the weakest voices bring glory to God when they praise Him in faith.
Application: Do we worship God with sincerity, or are we just going through the motions?
Conclusion:
Jesus teaches us that true praise comes from a heart of faith, no matter how young or simple the worshiper may be. God delights in pure, childlike praise, and He rejects prideful hearts that refuse to honor Him.
Reflection Questions:
- Do you worship God with the faith and sincerity of a child?
- Is there anything (pride, fear, doubt) hindering your worship?
- How can you develop a heart of true worship this week?
Closing Prayer:
Lord, help us to worship You with pure and sincere hearts, just as the children did. Remove any pride or doubt that keeps us from truly honoring You. Let our praise bring glory to Your name. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
