Peace in the Storm: Trusting Jesus When Life Gets Rough*

Matthew 8:26

Key Text:

“He replied, ‘You of little faith, why are you so afraid?’ Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm.” - Matthew 8:26

Introduction:

Life is full of storms—trials, uncertainties, and challenges that shake our faith. In Matthew 8:26, we find the disciples terrified in a storm, fearing for their lives. Yet, Jesus responds, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then, He calms the storm with His authority.

This passage teaches us three key lessons:

  1. Storms Will Come, But Jesus Is With Us
  2. Fear Weakens Faith, But Faith Overcomes Fear
  3. Jesus Has Power Over Every Storm

1. Storms Will Come, But Jesus Is With Us

The disciples found themselves in a violent storm, even though they were following Jesus. This reminds us that being a Christian does not mean we are exempt from difficulties.

  • Trials Are Part of Life - Jesus Himself said, “In this world you will have trouble” (John 16:33).
  • Jesus Was in the Boat - Though the storm raged, Jesus was right there with them. He is also with us in every struggle.
  • Faith Is Tested in Storms - Storms reveal whether we trust God or allow fear to control us.

Application: When difficulties arise, remember that Jesus is in your boat—He is always with you.

2. Fear Weakens Faith, But Faith Overcomes Fear

The disciples panicked and cried out, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!” (Matthew 8:25). Their fear blinded them to the presence and power of Jesus.

  • Fear Distracts Us From Jesus - When we focus on our problems instead of God, we begin to sink in doubt.
  • Faith Trusts Even When Things Look Hopeless - True faith believes that Jesus has control, even when we don’t see a way out.
  • Jesus Calls Us to Faith, Not Fear - He rebuked the disciples for their little faith, showing that faith and fear cannot coexist.

Application: When fear tries to take over, choose to trust God’s power and promises.

3. Jesus Has Power Over Every Storm

After rebuking the disciples for their lack of faith, Jesus rebuked the storm—and it became completely calm.

  • Jesus Has Authority Over Nature - He speaks, and winds and waves obey Him.
  • Jesus Has Authority Over Every Situation - Whether it’s sickness, financial struggles, or emotional turmoil, He is still in control.
  • Peace Comes From Trusting Jesus - The storm didn’t wake Jesus, but the cries of His disciples did. He hears our prayers and responds with power.

Application: No matter what storm you are facing, trust in Jesus’ power to bring peace.

Conclusion:

Jesus’ words, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” challenge us to examine our hearts. Are we living in fear or in faith? Storms will come, but when we trust in Jesus, we can have peace in the midst of the storm.

Reflection Questions:

  1. What storms are you facing right now?
  2. Are you responding with fear or with faith in Jesus?
  3. How can you grow in trusting Jesus even in difficult times?

Closing Prayer:

Lord, help us to trust You in every storm. Strengthen our faith so that we will not be overcome by fear. Remind us that You are always with us and that You have power over every situation. We place our confidence in You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
