Doing Good When It’s in Your Power

Proverbs 3:27

Text:

“Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to act.” — Proverbs 3:27 (NIV)

Introduction

In a world where people often focus on their own needs, Proverbs 3:27 reminds us of our responsibility to do good whenever we have the ability. God calls us to be a blessing to others, not to delay or withhold kindness when we have the opportunity to help.

1. The Command to Do Good

The verse begins with a clear instruction: “Do not withhold good.” This means that when we see someone in need and have the ability to help, we should act. God has placed us in positions where we can be His hands and feet in the world.

Application:

  • Do we recognize the opportunities God gives us to help others?
  • Are we willing to be generous with our time, resources, and kindness?

2. Helping Those in Need

The phrase “to whom it is due” suggests that there are people who rightfully deserve or need our help. This could include those who work for us, the poor, the oppressed, or even friends and family who need support.

Application:

  • Sometimes, people are struggling silently—are we attentive to their needs?
  • Helping others is not just about money, encouragement, kindness, and time can make a difference.

3. Acting When We Have the Power

The verse also tells us to act “when it is in your power to do so.” This means that God does not expect us to do what we cannot, but He does expect us to be faithful with what we have.

Application:

  • If God has blessed us, are we using our blessings to help others?
  • Are we making excuses when we actually have the ability to make a difference?

Conclusion

Proverbs 3:27 challenges us to live with open hands and hearts, always ready to do good when we have the ability. As followers of Christ, we should not delay in helping those in need, knowing that God has placed us in positions to bless others.

Closing Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You for the opportunities You give us to do good. Help us to be generous, kind, and willing to help those in need. Teach us to act when we have the power to make a difference. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
