Light in the Darkness: God's Provision for His People

Exodus 10:23

Text: Exodus 10:23 (NIV) — “No one could see anyone else or move about for three days. Yet all the Israelites had light in the places where they lived.”

Introduction:

Exodus 10:23 occurs during the ninth plague in Egypt, a plague of total darkness. This was not an ordinary nightfall but a thick, oppressive darkness that paralyzed the Egyptians. Yet, in the midst of this terrifying event, God provided light for His people. This passage illustrates God’s power, protection, and provision even when darkness surrounds us.

1. The Reality of Spiritual Darkness

  • The Egyptians faced literal darkness, but it symbolizes a deeper spiritual blindness and separation from God. They were unable to see or move, representing the confusion and helplessness that comes from rejecting God and living in sin.
  • Point: Darkness represents confusion, hopelessness, fear, and sin. Our world today often feels spiritually dark, with many people lost in sin and searching for meaning and purpose.
  • Example: John 3:19 — “Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil.” People often reject the light of truth because it exposes their sin and challenges their comfortable lifestyles.

Without God, people stumble through life in spiritual darkness, unable to see the truth or find their way to salvation.

Application: Are you living in the light of God’s truth, or are you stumbling in spiritual darkness? Are you following the path of righteousness, or are you allowing sin to cloud your judgment and lead you astray? Seek the light found in Jesus Christ. He is the way, the truth, and the life.

2. God Provides Light for His People

  • While Egypt was plunged into darkness, the Israelites had light in their homes. This miraculous provision demonstrated God's power and His special care for His people.
  • Point: God is able to protect and provide for His people even in the worst circumstances. He is our refuge and strength, a very present help in times of trouble.
  • Example: Psalm 27:1 — “The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear?” When we trust in God, we have nothing to fear, even when surrounded by darkness and uncertainty.
  • Illustration: Just as God gave the Israelites light in Goshen, He offers us His light through His Word and the Holy Spirit. The Bible is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path, guiding us in His ways. The Holy Spirit illuminates our hearts and minds, helping us to understand and apply God's truth.

God’s light guides, comforts, and gives hope in dark times. It illuminates our path, dispels our fears, and leads us to safety and security.

Application: Trust in God’s provision and light, even when circumstances seem hopeless. When you feel surrounded by darkness, remember that God is with you. He will never leave you nor forsake you. His light will guide you through the darkness and lead you to His perfect plan for your life.

3. Jesus, the Light of the World

  • The physical light given to the Israelites foreshadows the spiritual light we receive through Jesus. He is the ultimate source of light, dispelling the darkness of sin and death.
  • John 8:12: “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.” Jesus is not just a light, He is the Light. He is the source of all truth, life, and hope.
  • Point: Jesus not only dispels the darkness but empowers us to shine His light in the world. When we follow Him, we become reflectors of His light, illuminating the lives of those around us.

In Christ, we become bearers of His light to a dark world. We are called to shine His light through our words, actions, and attitudes, reflecting His love and truth to those who are lost in darkness.

Application: Shine the light of Christ in your family, community, and workplace. Let your life reflect His truth and love. Be a beacon of hope in a world that is often filled with despair and darkness.

Conclusion:

Exodus 10:23 is a powerful reminder that God’s light shines for His people even when the world is plunged into darkness. Just as God provided light for the Israelites, He offers us the true Light through Jesus Christ.

  • Challenge: Will you trust God to be your light in dark times and reflect that light to others? Will you allow His light to shine through you, illuminating the lives of those around you?
  • Encouragement: God's light is always available to you. When you feel surrounded by darkness, turn to Him. He will guide you, protect you, and give you hope.

Closing Verse: Matthew 5:16 — “Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

Prayer:

Lord, thank You for being our light in the darkness. Help us to trust in Your provision and reflect Your light to those around us. May our lives be a testimony to Your love and truth, drawing others to You and bringing glory to Your name. Amen.
