Yahweh – I Am Who I Am
Exodus 3:13-14
Main Scripture:
Exodus 3:13-14 (ESV)
Then Moses said to God,
“If I come to the people of Israel and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is His name?’ what shall I say to them?”
God said to Moses,
“I AM WHO I AM.”
And He said,
“Say this to the people of Israel: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’”
Introduction: The Power of a Name
Names in the Bible are more than labels — they reveal identity, character, and destiny.
So when Moses meets God at the burning bush, he doesn’t just ask who is speaking — he asks, “What is Your name?”
God doesn’t give a title like “King” or “Creator.”
He gives a name: Yahweh — “I AM WHO I AM.”
This name becomes the most sacred in all of Scripture, repeated over 6,000 times in the Old Testament.
1. Yahweh Declares God’s Eternal Existence
“I AM” means He has no beginning and no end. He simply is.
📖 Revelation 1:8
“I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.”
He doesn’t rely on anyone or anything to exist.
He’s not created. He’s Creator.
💡 Application:
Everything in your life changes — jobs, health, relationships.
But Yahweh never changes. When life feels unstable, you can lean on the unchanging I AM.
2. Yahweh Means God Is Always Present
“I AM” is present tense — always now. Not “I was,” not “I will be,” but I AM.
📖 Psalm 46:1
“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.”
He’s not just the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob — He’s the God of right now.
Wherever you are, however you feel, Yahweh is with you.
💡 Application:
You don’t have to wait until you’re better, stronger, or more spiritual.
God is I AM for you today — not I WAS or I MIGHT BE.
3. Yahweh Is All-Sufficient
When God says, “I AM,” it’s like leaving a blank space — and inviting you to fill it with whatever you need.
- Are you anxious? → “I AM your peace.”
- Are you lost? → “I AM your guide.”
- Are you weak? → “I AM your strength.”
He doesn’t say, “I will give you what you need.”
He says, “I AM what you need.”
📖 Philippians 4:19
“And my God will supply every need of yours according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.”
💡 Application:
Instead of asking God to fix your situation, start asking Him to be your everything in the situation.
4. Jesus Revealed Himself as I AM
In the New Testament, Jesus boldly identifies Himself with the divine name:
📖 John 8:58
“Before Abraham was born, I AM.”
That’s why the religious leaders picked up stones — Jesus wasn’t just claiming to be a teacher, He was claiming to be Yahweh in the flesh.
And Jesus used seven “I AM” statements to show us how Yahweh meets our deepest needs:
- “I AM the Bread of Life”
- “I AM the Light of the World”
- “I AM the Good Shepherd”
- “I AM the Way, the Truth, and the Life”
…and more.
💡 Application:
Yahweh is not distant. He walked among us in Jesus. If you want to know Yahweh, look at Christ.
Closing Encouragement
When God revealed Himself to Moses, He wasn’t just giving theology. He was saying:
“I am everything you need, for everything you face, at every moment.”
You may not feel like you’re enough.
But Yahweh says, “I AM.”
That’s all you need.
Closing Prayer
Yahweh, the great I AM, we worship You for who You are — eternal, unchanging, ever-present, and all-sufficient.
When we are weak, be our strength. When we are afraid, be our peace.
Teach us to trust not in what You give but in who You are.
Thank You for revealing Yourself through Jesus, the I AM made flesh.
We love You, we need You, and we follow You.
In the name of Jesus, Amen.
