Jesus, the Bread of Life

John 6:48-58

Text: John 6:48-58 “I am the bread of life… Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.” (John 6:48, 54)

Introduction:

In John 6:48-58, Jesus makes a profound declaration that shocked His audience: He is the Bread of Life, and those who eat His flesh and drink His blood will have eternal life. This statement points to the spiritual sustenance Jesus offers to every believer.

Today, we will explore three truths from this passage:

  1. Jesus as the Bread of Life
  2. The Necessity of Partaking in Christ
  3. The Promise of Eternal Life

1. Jesus as the Bread of Life

“I am the bread of life.” (John 6:48)

The Context:

  • After feeding the 5,000, Jesus contrasts physical bread with spiritual nourishment.
  • The Jews recalled manna in the wilderness, but Jesus declares Himself as the true bread from heaven.

Why Bread?

  • Bread was essential for daily life.
  • By calling Himself the Bread of Life, Jesus emphasizes that He is essential for our spiritual survival.

Application: Just as bread sustains physical life, Jesus sustains our souls. Are you feeding on Him daily through His Word and prayer? How can we make Jesus the essential part of our spiritual diet?

2. The Necessity of Partaking in Christ

“Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them.” (John 6:56)

What Does This Mean?

  • Jesus is not speaking literally but uses symbolic language to illustrate a deeper spiritual truth:
    • Faith in His Sacrifice: Believing in His death on the cross for our sins.
    • Union with Christ: A deep relationship where we are spiritually nourished by Him.

Illustration: Just as food becomes part of our bodies when we eat it, Jesus becomes part of us when we trust in Him and live by His Word.

Application: Are you merely acknowledging Jesus intellectually, or are you fully partaking in His life and sacrifice through genuine faith? How can we cultivate a deeper union with Christ and allow Him to transform us from the inside out?

3. The Promise of Eternal Life

“Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.” (John 6:54)

Eternal Life:

  • Jesus promises that those who partake in Him will never be spiritually hungry or thirsty again (John 6:35).
  • This life begins now as we experience His peace, joy, and presence.

Resurrection:

  • Jesus guarantees a future resurrection for believers (1 Corinthians 15:20).

Illustration: Imagine a fountain that never runs dry. Jesus offers a constant supply of spiritual life that sustains us now and leads to eternal glory.

Application: Are you living with the assurance of eternal life? Trust in Jesus, the Bread of Life, and experience His eternal nourishment. How can we live with an eternal perspective, focusing on the things that truly matter?

Conclusion:

In John 6:48-58, Jesus invites us to partake in Him as the Bread of Life. This invitation requires faith, a deep relationship with Him, and a heart open to His transforming power.

Let us examine our own spiritual hunger. Are we feeding on temporary things, or are we being nourished by the eternal Bread of Life?

Challenge: This week, make time to “feed” on Jesus through intentional prayer, Bible reading, and reflection on His sacrifice. Let Him be your source of strength and satisfaction.

Closing Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You for sending Jesus, the Bread of Life. Help us to hunger for Him and be nourished by His Word and presence. Strengthen our faith, deepen our relationship with You, and fill us with the assurance of eternal life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
