Grace and Truth Through Jesus Christ

John 1:17

Scripture: “For the law was given through Moses, grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.” - John 1:17

Introduction

John 1:17 highlights the contrast between the Old Testament law given through Moses and the new covenant of grace and truth brought by Jesus Christ. While the law was necessary to reveal God’s standards, it is through Jesus that we experience the fullness of God’s mercy and truth.

1. The Law Given Through Moses

God gave the law to Moses to guide His people in righteousness. The law revealed God’s holiness and showed humanity its need for salvation. However, the law by itself could not save—it pointed to the need for a Savior.

Paul writes in Romans 3:20, “Through the law we become conscious of our sin.” The law was a tutor leading us to Christ (Galatians 3:24), showing that no one could be righteous by their own works.

2. Grace and Truth Through Jesus Christ

While the law brought the knowledge of sin, Jesus brought the solution—grace and truth.

  • Grace is God’s unmerited favor, offering salvation to all who believe (Ephesians 2:8-9). Through Jesus’ death and resurrection, we receive forgiveness, not because we deserve it, but because of God’s love.
  • Truth is God’s unchanging nature and moral standard. Jesus did not abolish the law but fulfilled it (Matthew 5:17). He embodied truth in His teachings and life, showing us how to live in obedience to God.

3. Living in Grace and Truth

As followers of Christ, we are called to walk in both grace and truth. Some emphasize grace without truth, leading to a watered-down faith that tolerates sin. Others emphasize truth without grace, leading to legalism and judgmental attitudes. Jesus perfectly balanced both—showing love while calling people to repentance.

Conclusion: Receiving and Sharing Grace and Truth

John 1:17 reminds us that salvation is not found in keeping the law but in knowing Jesus. He offers us grace for our failures and truth to guide our lives. As we receive His grace, let us also extend it to others while standing firm in His truth.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the grace and truth we have in Jesus Christ. Help us to walk in the freedom of Your grace while living in the truth of Your Word. Teach us to share both with others, reflecting Your love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
