Flee from Sexual Immorality

1 Corinthians 6:18

Scripture: 1 Corinthians 6:18

Introduction

The world today often blurs the lines between what is holy and what is acceptable. In many ways, society has redefined boundaries when it comes to relationships and sexuality. However, as believers in Christ, we are called to live by a different standard—a standard that honors God with our bodies and our lives. In 1 Corinthians 6:18, Paul gives us a strong, clear command to flee from sexual immorality. This is not just a suggestion, but a directive for those who are followers of Christ.

1 Corinthians 6:18 says: “Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body.”

This verse teaches us three key truths:

  1. The Command to Flee
  2. The Seriousness of Sexual Sin
  3. Our Bodies Are Temples of the Holy Spirit

1. The Command to Flee

Paul begins by telling us to flee from sexual immorality. The word “flee” implies a sense of urgency and action. We are not to entertain, flirt with, or “play with” sexual sin, we are to run from it. This is an active decision to turn away from temptation and to seek purity in every area of our lives.

Why the urgency? Because sexual sin can be particularly destructive. It entangles people in emotional, physical, and spiritual consequences that affect not only the individual but also relationships with others and with God. Fleeing from immorality means not putting ourselves in situations where temptation can overpower us. It means setting boundaries and making choices that protect our purity.

Application:

  • Evaluate your life. Are there areas where you’re allowing temptation to creep in?
  • Flee from situations or relationships that draw you into immorality. Take proactive steps to protect yourself.

2. The Seriousness of Sexual Sin

Paul goes on to explain that sexual sin is different from other sins: “All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body.” Sexual immorality is unique because it directly affects our bodies, the very vessels in which God’s Spirit dwells. The body is not just a temporary shell, it is sacred, created by God for His glory.

When we engage in sexual sin, we violate the sanctity of our bodies. We harm our physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. Paul emphasizes that sexual sin goes beyond just “breaking the rules”, it’s a sin against oneself. It breaks the unity and sanctity God designed for our bodies.

Application:

  • Recognize that your body is a sacred gift from God. How you treat your body matters to Him.
  • When tempted, remind yourself that sexual sin doesn’t just affect others—it harms you and your relationship with God.

3. Our Bodies Are Temples of the Holy Spirit

In the verses surrounding 1 Corinthians 6:18, Paul teaches us that as believers, our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit. When we accept Christ, the Holy Spirit dwells in us. Our bodies are not our own, they are God’s dwelling place. Therefore, we are called to honor God with our bodies.

Sexual sin defiles this temple. It’s a rejection of the truth that God has a purpose for our bodies—a purpose that honors Him. To honor God with our bodies means to live in purity, to recognize the high calling of our lives, and to avoid anything that would diminish the sanctity of the body as a temple of the Holy Spirit.

Application:

  • Reflect on the truth that your body is a temple of God. What choices are you making with your body that honor or dishonor Him?
  • Take time to renew your commitment to purity, knowing that your body is not only yours but is sacred to God.

Conclusion

1 Corinthians 6:18 calls us to flee from sexual immorality, not because God wants to restrict us but because He desires to protect us. Sexual sin is uniquely damaging to the body and to our relationship with God. But by fleeing from immorality, we honor God with our bodies and live according to His purpose for our lives. Let us remember that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, and we are called to live in a way that reflects the holiness of God.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, we thank You for the truth of Your Word. Help us to flee from sexual immorality and to honor You with our bodies. Give us the strength to resist temptation and the wisdom to make choices that align with Your will. May our lives reflect the holiness of Your presence in us. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
