Fixing Our Eyes on Jesus
Hebrews 12:2
Scripture: Hebrews 12:2 (NIV)
“Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”
Introduction
In the Christian walk, we are often called to endure hardships, persevere through challenges, and keep pressing forward in faith. But how do we remain steadfast when life gets tough? Hebrews 12:2 provides us with a clear answer: we are to fix our eyes on Jesus. This verse points us to the ultimate source of strength, encouragement, and hope. Today, we will unpack this verse and learn why keeping our eyes on Jesus is essential to our spiritual journey.
1. Fixing Our Eyes on Jesus: A Focused Purpose
- A Call to Focus:
- Hebrews 12:2 begins with a strong directive: “Let us fix our eyes on Jesus.” The word “fix” suggests an intentional focus—like someone with tunnel vision, blocking out distractions and concentrating solely on the goal. In the Christian life, Jesus is our ultimate goal, and focusing on Him is essential for our perseverance.
- Distractions of Life:
- The world around us offers countless distractions—temptations, doubts, and struggles that can pull our attention away from Jesus. Whether it’s the pressures of daily life, the allure of worldly success, or the challenges of suffering, we are constantly bombarded with distractions. Fixing our eyes on Jesus helps us avoid these distractions and stay aligned with our calling.
2. Jesus: The Author and Perfecter of Our Faith
- Jesus as the Author:
- The verse also describes Jesus as the “author of our faith.” This means that Jesus is the one who began our faith. It is through Him that we first come to believe in God’s promises. He is the initiator of our spiritual journey, and without His work, we would not have the opportunity to walk in faith.
- Jesus as the Perfecter:
- Jesus is not only the author of our faith but also the “perfecter” of it. He is the one who brings our faith to maturity. As we walk with Him, He molds, strengthens, and refines our faith, making it whole and complete. Our faith is a journey from beginning to end, and Jesus leads us every step of the way.
3. The Joy Set Before Him: Enduring the Cross
- Jesus’ Motivation:
- The verse goes on to say that Jesus “for the joy set before Him endured the cross.” This highlights that Jesus endured the suffering of the cross not because He wanted to suffer, but because He saw the greater joy on the other side—the joy of fulfilling God’s plan for salvation and the joy of reconciling humanity to Himself.
- Joy Through Suffering:
- Jesus’ willingness to endure the cross teaches us that suffering in this life, while painful, is not without purpose. There is a greater joy ahead—eternal life, peace with God, and the joy of seeing His kingdom come. Jesus endured the shame and agony of the cross because He had a vision of the victory that was to come.
4. Scorning Its Shame: The Victory of the Cross
- Overcoming Shame:
- The verse also mentions that Jesus “scorned its shame.” The cross was not only physically painful but also shameful. It was a form of public humiliation reserved for criminals. Yet, Jesus disregarded this shame because He knew the purpose behind His suffering. His victory over shame is a powerful reminder that we too can overcome the shame and struggles in our lives by focusing on the bigger picture.
- The Cross as Victory:
- In the world’s eyes, the cross looked like defeat, but in God’s plan, it was the ultimate victory. Through His suffering, Jesus conquered sin and death, offering redemption to all who believe. The shame of the cross was turned into the triumph of resurrection.
5. Sitting Down at the Right Hand of God: Jesus’ Victory
- The Fulfillment of Jesus’ Work:
- Finally, the verse tells us that after enduring the cross, Jesus “sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” This signifies that His work was complete. The right hand of God symbolizes authority and honor, and by sitting at God’s right hand, Jesus reigns with all power and glory.
- Jesus’ Authority:
- Jesus’ exaltation shows us that He is not only the Savior who suffered, but also the reigning King who now sits in authority over all things. This brings us hope and assurance that He is in control, and His victory over sin and death is final.
Conclusion
Hebrews 12:2 challenges us to fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith. When we focus on Him, we are reminded of His sacrifice, His victory, and the joy that awaits us. Just as Jesus endured the cross for the joy set before Him, we are called to endure our trials with the hope of eternal life. Let us keep our eyes on Jesus, knowing that He is with us every step of the way, and that in Him, we have victory.
Amen.
