Boldness and Access Through Faith

Ephesians 3:12

Scripture:

“In him and through faith in him we may approach God with freedom and confidence.” - Ephesians 3:12 (NIV)

Introduction

Many people struggle with feeling distant from God. They wonder if He truly listens to their prayers or if they are worthy to approach Him. But Ephesians 3:12 gives us a powerful truth: because of Jesus, we have direct access to God with boldness and confidence.

This verse reminds us that our relationship with God is not based on fear, rituals, or our own righteousness, but on faith in Christ. Today, let’s explore three key aspects of this verse:

  1. Our Access to God - “In Him”
  2. The Means of Access - “Through Faith”
  3. The Manner of Approach - “With Freedom and Confidence”

1. Our Access to God - “In Him”

Paul begins by saying, “In Him…” This means that our ability to approach God comes only through Jesus Christ.

  • Jesus is the Mediator: In the Old Testament, people could only approach God through priests, sacrifices, and the temple. But Jesus removed these barriers by His death and resurrection. Now, we come to God directly through Christ (Hebrews 10:19-22).
  • No More Separation: Sin once separated us from God (Isaiah 59:2), but Jesus reconciled us to Him (Romans 5:10). We are no longer enemies of God but His beloved children.
  • We Belong to Him: Our access to God is based on our identity in Christ, not on our own worthiness. When we are in Him, we are fully accepted by God.

Application: If you have put your faith in Christ, you don’t have to wonder if God hears you—you have full access to Him because of Jesus.

2. The Means of Access - “Through Faith”

Paul clarifies that we approach God “through faith in Him.”

  • Faith, Not Works: Many believe they must be good enough or earn God’s favor before they can come to Him. But Paul reminds us that our access is based on faith alone, not our own efforts (Ephesians 2:8-9).
  • Faith in Christ’s Finished Work: We come to God not based on our performance, but on what Jesus has already done. His sacrifice is enough! (Hebrews 4:16).
  • Faith Removes Fear: Without faith, we may feel hesitant or afraid to approach God. But when we trust in Jesus, we come with assurance, knowing we are welcomed.

Application: We should never let guilt, doubt, or past mistakes keep us from coming to God. Through faith in Christ, we can always approach Him freely.

3. The Manner of Approach - “With Freedom and Confidence”

Paul tells us that we may approach God “with freedom and confidence.” What does this mean?

  • Freedom (Boldness): We are not like slaves who fear their master—we are children of God (Romans 8:15). We can pray, worship, and seek God without hesitation.
  • Confidence (Assurance): We do not have to wonder if God is listening—He invites us to come boldly before His throne (Hebrews 4:16).
  • No Barriers: We have complete access to God at all times—whether we feel strong or weak, whether we have failed or succeeded. God welcomes us as we are.

Application: When we pray or seek God, we should do so with boldness and confidence, knowing that we are fully accepted in Christ.

Conclusion

Ephesians 3:12 is a powerful reminder that, because of Jesus, we can come to God freely and confidently.

  • Our access to God is found in Christ.
  • We approach Him through faith, not works.
  • We come with boldness and confidence, not fear.

Let this truth change how you approach God! Come to Him freely, knowing that He welcomes you with open arms.
