You’ll Know Them by Their Fruit
Matthew 7:16–20
Scripture: Matthew 7:16–20 (NIV) “By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit…”
Introduction:
Have you ever walked through a forest and tried to tell one tree from another? Many trees—especially when they’re young—look almost the same. Their bark is rough. Their leaves are green. Their branches reach for the sky. From a distance, it’s hard to tell which is which. But if you wait long enough… if you watch patiently… something starts to grow.
The fruit tells the truth.
In the same way, many people can look the part. They talk right. They dress right. They show up in the right places. But Jesus teaches us: You will know them by their fruit—not by their foliage, not by their appearance, not by how close they grow to other trees… but by what comes out of their lives.
1: Looking Like a Tree Is Not Enough
Jesus said in Matthew 7:15, “Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves.”
Let’s put that in tree terms. Some trees might have lush leaves and impressive height, but inside they are rotting. The outward appearance is not the proof of righteousness—the fruit is.
We can’t be satisfied with looking like Christians.
- Being in church every Sunday is not the fruit.
- Quoting scripture on social media is not the fruit.
- Wearing a cross around your neck is not the fruit.
These might be leaves, but they’re not fruit. And God is looking for fruit.
2: The Fruit Reveals the Root
Galatians 5:22–23 tells us what good fruit looks like: “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control…”
Notice: it doesn’t say “the fruit of your effort” or “the fruit of religious behavior”—it says “the fruit of the Spirit.” That means if the Holy Spirit is truly living in you, something real will grow from within you. Love when it’s hard. Joy in tough times. Peace when the world is shaking. Patience when others are rushing. These are not decorations, these are signs of divine life.
Whatever is at the root will eventually show up in the fruit.
If we’re rooted in pride, bitterness, or self-interest, it will come out—maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but one day, the fruit will show.
But if we’re rooted in Christ, His character will bloom in us.
3: Time Will Tell
Here’s the hard truth: fruit takes time. You don’t plant a seed and see apples tomorrow. It takes water. It takes pruning. It takes sun and sometimes storms. But in time, the fruit appears.
God is not calling you to perform—He’s calling you to grow. He’s not rushing your harvest—but He is watching what’s growing.
So instead of asking, “How do I look?” Ask, “What am I producing?”
Is your life helping others taste God’s goodness? Do people leave your presence more joyful, more peaceful, more loved?
If not—don’t be discouraged. Ask the Gardener to work on your soil.
Conclusion:
There are many trees in the forest of life. And many look the same. But the only way to know which tree is which… is to check the fruit.
Jesus said in Matthew 7:19–20: “Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them.”
That’s not a threat—it’s a wake-up call. God is not looking for fake branches, He’s looking for real fruit.
Today’s Prayer:
Lord, I don’t want to just look like a tree. I want to be rooted in You. Make me fruitful in love, in peace, in patience. Let my life bear evidence that You live in me. Prune what needs to go. Water what needs to grow. And help me to be a tree that bears fruit in season, for Your glory. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
