Walking in Spiritual Discernment

1 Thessalonians 5:19-22

Scripture: 1 Thessalonians 5:19-22 (NIV)

“Do not quench the Spirit. Do not treat prophecies with contempt but test them all, hold on to what is good, reject every kind of evil.”

Introduction

As believers, we are called to live in alignment with the Holy Spirit, discerning what is true and rejecting what is evil. In 1 Thessalonians 5:19-22, Paul gives us four important instructions: Don’t quench the Spirit, don’t despise prophecies, test everything, and reject evil. These commands help us walk faithfully in a world full of deception and spiritual challenges.

1. Do Not Quench the Spirit - Staying Open to God’s Leading

  • What Does It Mean to Quench the Spirit?
    • The Holy Spirit works in us to guide, convict, and empower us for God’s purposes.
    • To “quench” means to suppress or extinguish. We quench the Spirit when we ignore His promptings, resist His conviction, or neglect our spiritual growth.
  • How Do We Quench the Spirit?
    • Ignoring God’s Word and prayer.
    • Resisting conviction and refusing to repent.
    • Neglecting the gifts and calling God has given us.
  • Living in the Spirit’s Fullness

    • We must remain sensitive to the Spirit by walking in obedience and seeking His presence daily (Ephesians 5:18).

    • Reflection: Are we allowing the Holy Spirit to lead us, or are we resisting His work in our lives?

2. Do Not Despise Prophecies - Receiving God’s Truth

  • Understanding Prophecy
    • In the Bible, prophecy refers to God’s revelation, which includes both foretelling (predicting the future) and forth-telling (speaking God’s truth).
    • Today, prophecy is primarily found in God’s Word, but God can also speak through Spirit-led individuals.
  • Why Some Despise Prophecy
    • Skepticism due to false teachings.
    • Pride or unwillingness to hear correction.
  • Receiving Prophecy with Discernment

    • We should not reject spiritual messages outright but examine them carefully.

    • Reflection: Are we open to receiving God’s truth, even when it challenges us?

3. Test Everything - Walking in Discernment

  • The Need for Testing
    • Not every spiritual message or teaching is from God. Some are deceptive (1 John 4:1).
    • False teachers and misleading doctrines exist (2 Timothy 4:3-4).
  • How to Test Everything
    • Compare it with Scripture—God’s Word is the ultimate standard.
    • Seek the Holy Spirit’s guidance.
    • Look at the fruit—true messages from God produce righteousness and spiritual growth (Matthew 7:15-20).
  • Holding on to What is Good

    • When we test teachings and practices, we should keep what aligns with God’s Word and strengthens our faith.

    • Reflection: Are we testing everything we hear and read against God’s truth?

4. Reject Every Kind of Evil - Living in Holiness

  • Recognizing Evil
    • Evil can come in obvious or subtle forms—sinful behaviors, false doctrines, or compromising influences.
  • A Call to Holiness
    • As God’s people, we are called to reject evil and live set apart (1 Peter 1:16).
  • Practical Ways to Reject Evil

    • Guard what we watch, read, and listen to.

    • Stay away from compromising situations.

    • Surround ourselves with godly influences.

    • Reflection: Are we actively rejecting evil in all areas of our lives?

Conclusion

Paul’s instructions call us to be spiritually vigilant. We must not quench the Spirit, but rather embrace God’s truth, test everything, and reject all evil. By doing so, we walk in discernment and remain faithful to God’s will.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, help us to be sensitive to Your Spirit, open to Your truth, and discerning in all things. Give us the wisdom to hold on to what is good and the courage to reject all evil. May our lives reflect Your holiness and bring glory to Your name. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
