Trusting God With What We Lack

Philippians 4:19

Text:
“And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.”
— Philippians 4:19 (ESV)

Introduction:

We all face moments where what we have doesn’t seem to be enough—whether it’s money, time, energy, wisdom, or even faith. But here’s the truth: God is not limited by what we lack. He often uses our limitations to showcase His power.

Let’s explore how we can learn to trust God not just in abundance, but especially in our lack.

1. God Often Starts With Lack

In John 6, Jesus feeds 5,000 men (plus women and children) with a boy’s lunch—five loaves and two fish. That’s not enough food by anyone’s standards, but Jesus wasn’t asking for abundance. He was asking for availability.

“Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?” (John 6:9)

That question echoes in our hearts too: “How far will what I have really go?”
But God doesn’t need a lot to do a lot. He just needs a little placed in His hands.

2. God Honors Sacrifice Over Size

Jesus once sat near the temple treasury and observed people giving their offerings. The rich gave large sums, but then came a poor widow who dropped in two small copper coins—all she had to live on.

“Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others.” (Mark 12:43)

She had very little, but she gave it in faith, trusting that God would take care of her. Jesus didn’t praise the amount—He praised the heart behind it.

When we give or serve from a place of lack, God sees it as an act of deep trust. And He honors that trust with His presence and provision.

3. Lack Prepares Us for Growth

Before David became king, he was a shepherd with no status, no armor, and no army. Just a sling and some stones. But he had something far greater than what he lacked—he had trust in the God he knew.

“You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty.” (1 Samuel 17:45)

Sometimes, what you lack in resources, God makes up for in revelation—in showing you who He is and what He can do through you.

4. God Fills What We Surrender

God is not intimidated by our emptiness. In 2 Kings 4, a widow had nothing but a jar of oil. Elisha told her to borrow empty jars from her neighbors—and as she poured out her little oil in faith, God filled every vessel.

“When all the jars were full, she said to her son, ‘Bring me another one.’ But he replied, ‘There is not a jar left.’ Then the oil stopped flowing.” (2 Kings 4:6)

The oil didn’t stop until there were no more jars. The lesson? God fills what we bring to Him in faith. He will meet us at the level of our expectation.

Closing Thought:

You may feel like you’re running on empty. Not enough strength, not enough wisdom, not enough money, not enough faith. But the good news is:

God is enough for what you’re not.

Trust Him. He sees your lack, and He’s not disappointed or worried. He’s waiting for you to place it in His hands, because little becomes much when God is in it.

Closing Prayer:

Heavenly Father,
Thank You for being more than enough for every area where we feel less than. Teach us to trust You not just when we have plenty, but especially when we lack. Remind us that You are our provider, our strength, and our sustainer. Fill our empty places with Your presence and peace. May we walk by faith, knowing You are always working, even in the unseen.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
