True Worship: Seeking, Humility, and Giving Our Best

Matthew 2:11

Text: “And when they had come into the house, they saw the young Child with Mary His mother, and fell down and worshiped Him. And when they had opened their treasures, they presented gifts to Him: gold, frankincense, and myrrh.” - Matthew 2:11

Introduction:

The story of the wise men visiting Jesus is one of the most well-known events in the birth narrative of Christ. These men traveled from the East, following a star, to find and worship the newborn King. Their journey and their response to Jesus teach us how we should approach Christ today—with worship, humility, and the willingness to give our best.

Today, we will look at three key lessons from this passage:

  1. True Worship Requires Seeking Jesus
  2. True Worship Requires Humility
  3. True Worship Involves Giving Our Best

1. True Worship Requires Seeking Jesus

  • The wise men traveled from a distant land, following a sign from God.
  • Matthew 2:2 - They asked, “Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the East and have come to worship Him.”
  • Their journey shows commitment and faith—they didn’t stop until they found Jesus.

Application: True worship begins when we actively seek Jesus in our lives. Are we diligently seeking Him in His Word, through prayer, and in our daily lives?

  • Jeremiah 29:13 - “You will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart.”

2. True Worship Requires Humility

  • When the wise men saw Jesus, they fell down and worshiped Him.
  • They were important and wealthy men, yet they humbled themselves before a child.
  • Worship is not about us—it’s about honoring Jesus as King.

Application: When we approach Jesus, we must come with humble hearts, surrendering our pride and recognizing Him as Lord. Are we willing to lay down our own desires and agendas to truly worship Him?

  • Philippians 2:10-11 - “At the name of Jesus every knee should bow… and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.”

3. True Worship Involves Giving Our Best

  • The wise men brought gold, frankincense, and myrrh:
    • Gold - Symbol of kingship (Jesus is our King).
    • Frankincense - Symbol of priesthood and worship (Jesus is our High Priest).
    • Myrrh - A burial spice, symbolizing His sacrifice (Jesus came to die for our sins).
  • They gave valuable gifts, showing that worship involves offering our best to God.

Application: We must offer Jesus our time, talents, resources, and devotion—giving Him the best of what we have. Are we holding back anything from Him, or are we giving Him our all?

  • Romans 12:1 - “Present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.”

Conclusion:

The wise men set an example of true worship—they sought Jesus, humbled themselves before Him, and gave their best. Today, we are invited to do the same.

Reflection Questions:

  • Are you actively seeking Jesus in your daily life?
  • Do you come before Him with humility and surrender?
  • Are you giving Him the best of what you have?

Closing Prayer:

Lord, thank You for revealing Jesus to us. Help us to seek You with all our hearts, to worship You in humility, and to offer You our best. May our lives be a reflection of true devotion to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
