Treasure in Jars of Clay
2 Corinthians 4:7-12
Scripture:
“But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed, perplexed, but not in despair, persecuted, but not abandoned, struck down, but not destroyed. We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body. For we who are alive are always being given over to death for Jesus’ sake, so that his life may also be revealed in our mortal body. So then, death is at work in us, but life is at work in you.” — 2 Corinthians 4:7-12 (NIV)
Introduction
Life is full of struggles, and sometimes we feel weak, broken, and unworthy. But in this passage, Paul gives us a powerful reminder: God places His treasure in fragile vessels like us so that His power may be revealed.
Paul, who suffered greatly for the gospel, knew firsthand that following Christ does not mean avoiding hardship. Instead, it means that even in our suffering, God’s strength is at work in us.
Three Key Lessons from This Passage:
- We Carry a Precious Treasure in Fragile Bodies
- We May Be Broken, But We Are Not Defeated
- Our Suffering Displays the Life of Jesus
1. We Carry a Precious Treasure in Fragile Bodies
Paul says, “We have this treasure in jars of clay.” The treasure is the gospel—the message of Jesus Christ and His salvation. But instead of placing this treasure in something strong and magnificent, God puts it in weak, fragile “jars of clay”—us.
- In ancient times, clay jars were ordinary, inexpensive, and easily broken.
- Likewise, we are weak, imperfect, and easily troubled by life’s hardships.
- Yet, God chooses to use weak people to show His power!
Why does God do this? “To show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us.” If we were strong on our own, we might take credit. But when God works through our weakness, He gets the glory!
2. We May Be Broken, But We Are Not Defeated
Paul describes four struggles, but in each one, there is hope:
- “Hard pressed on every side, but not crushed.”
- Life’s pressures may weigh us down, but God sustains us.
- “Perplexed, but not in despair.”
- We may not always understand God’s plan, but we trust in Him.
- “Persecuted, but not abandoned.”
- The world may reject us, but God never leaves us.
- “Struck down, but not destroyed.”
- We may fall, but God lifts us up again.
No matter how difficult life gets, God’s power keeps us going!
3. Our Suffering Displays the Life of Jesus
Paul writes, “We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed.” This means that:
- Just as Jesus suffered for us, we will also experience trials.
- Our struggles allow us to identify with Christ (Philippians 3:10).
- When we endure hardship, we reflect the power and resurrection of Jesus.
Paul says, “Death is at work in us, but life is at work in you.” His suffering led to the spiritual growth of others. Sometimes, our trials are not just for us—they can be a testimony that strengthens others.
Application: How Do We Live in This Strength?
- Acknowledge Your Weakness - Don’t rely on your own strength, depend on God.
- Trust in God’s Power - Even in suffering, He is working in and through you.
- Be a Witness in Trials - Let your faith encourage others.
- Persevere in Faith - No matter how hard life gets, hold on to Christ.
Conclusion
We are weak and fragile, like jars of clay, but inside us is the priceless treasure of the gospel. Our trials may press us, but they will never destroy us—because God’s power is at work in us. Let us trust in Him, knowing that through our struggles, His strength is revealed, His glory is displayed, and His life is made known to the world.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for placing Your treasure within us. Though we are weak, Your power sustains us. Help us to trust You in our struggles, knowing that You are working for our good and Your glory. May we be a light to others, even in difficult times. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
