To God Be the Glory

Psalm 115:1

Text: “Not unto us, O Lord, not unto us, but to Your name give glory, because of Your mercy, because of Your truth.” (Psalm 115:1, NKJV)

Introduction:

In a world where people seek recognition, fame, and self-glory, Psalm 115:1 reminds us that all glory belongs to God alone. Our success, blessings, and victories are not for our own honor, but to magnify His name. Today, we will explore why we must give all glory to God, how we can do so, and the blessings that come from living for His glory.

1. Why Does Glory Belong to God?

“Not unto us, O Lord, not unto us, but to Your name give glory…”

  • God is the Source of All Good Things: Every blessing we have—life, salvation, and provision—comes from Him (James 1:17).
  • We Are Nothing Without Him: Our abilities, talents, and achievements are only possible because of God’s grace (1 Corinthians 4:7).
  • He Alone is Worthy of Worship: Unlike man, God is holy, eternal, and sovereign (Revelation 4:11).

Illustration: Imagine a lamp taking credit for its brightness, forgetting that its power comes from being plugged into a source. We, too, shine only because of God’s power working in us.

Key Point: True humility recognizes that every victory, every success, and every blessing belongs to God, not us.

2. How Do We Give God the Glory?

  • Through Worship and Praise: We must daily acknowledge His greatness (Psalm 29:2).
  • By Living a Holy Life: Our obedience and righteousness reflect His glory (Matthew 5:16).
  • In Our Success and Achievements: Instead of boasting, we should point others to God’s goodness (1 Corinthians 10:31).
  • By Trusting Him in Difficult Times: When we remain faithful in trials, we testify of His power (Job 1:21).

Application:

  • Instead of taking credit, say, “To God be the glory!”
  • When others praise you, redirect the honor to Him.
  • Use your gifts and blessings to serve Him and others.

Key Point: Glorifying God is not just with words but through how we live our lives.

3. The Blessings of Living for God’s Glory

“Because of Your mercy, because of Your truth.”

When we live for God’s glory, we experience:

  • His Mercy: God’s grace covers our weaknesses and failures (Lamentations 3:22-23).
  • His Truth: He guides our lives in righteousness and purpose (John 8:32).
  • His Favor and Protection: Those who honor God are blessed (Psalm 91:14-15).
  • Eternal Reward: Those who live for His glory will share in His eternal kingdom (2 Timothy 4:8).

Key Point: Living for God’s glory brings joy, peace, and lasting rewards that surpass anything this world offers.

Conclusion:

Psalm 115:1 teaches us to remove ourselves from the spotlight and place God at the center of everything. We glorify Him because He alone is worthy. Let us commit to living lives that reflect His greatness, point others to Him, and declare, “Not unto us, O Lord, but to Your name be the glory!”

Closing Prayer:

Heavenly Father, we acknowledge that all glory belongs to You. Help us to walk in humility, always pointing others to Your greatness. May our lives be a reflection of Your mercy and truth. Teach us to live in a way that honors You in all we do. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
