The Spirit of Adoption

Romans 8:15

Scripture: Romans 8:15

Introduction:

In our world, many people long for belonging, acceptance, and love. We can search for these things in relationships, achievements, or possessions, but the ultimate sense of belonging is found only in God. Romans 8:15 offers us a profound truth: as believers, we are not slaves to fear but children of the living God.

Romans 8:15 says: “The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again, rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, ‘Abba, Father.’”

This verse teaches us three powerful truths:

  1. Freedom from Fear
  2. Adoption into God’s Family
  3. Intimate Relationship with God

1. Freedom from Fear

  • Paul begins by telling us that the Spirit we receive does not make us slaves to fear.
  • Before knowing Christ, we were enslaved to the fear of judgment, death, and our own sin.
  • Through the Holy Spirit, we are freed from that fear.

Application:

  • As children of God, we no longer need to fear God’s judgment or punishment for sin—Christ took it all on the cross.
  • Fear may still come, but it does not control us. We have been set free to live in God’s love and grace.

2. Adoption into God’s Family

  • The verse continues: “The Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship.”
  • Through faith in Christ, we are adopted into God’s family.
  • We are no longer strangers or outcasts but beloved children of God.
  • Adoption is permanent.

Application:

  • No matter your background or past, you are a child of God if you believe in Jesus Christ.
  • Live confidently, knowing that you are fully accepted and loved by God.

3. Intimate Relationship with God

  • Paul says, “By him we cry, ‘Abba, Father.’”
  • “Abba” is an intimate term, like saying “Daddy.”
  • It reflects the deep, personal relationship we now have with God.
  • We can approach God as our loving Father, not in fear, but with the confidence of a child.

Application:

  • God is not distant or aloof—He is your Father, and He desires a personal, intimate relationship with you.
  • Spend time in prayer, not just as a duty, but as an opportunity to draw near to your loving Father.

Conclusion:

Romans 8:15 reminds us that we are not slaves to fear but children of God. Through the Holy Spirit, we have been adopted into God’s family, and we can call Him “Abba, Father.” Let us live in the freedom of this new identity, drawing near to Him in love and confidence.

Closing Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You for adopting us into Your family through the Holy Spirit. We no longer live in fear, but we live in the freedom and love You have given us. Help us to draw near to You as our loving Father and live in the confidence that we are Your children. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
