The Seven Sins God Hates: A Call to Righteous Living

Proverbs 6:16-19

Text: Proverbs 6:16-19 “There are six things the Lord hates, seven that are detestable to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil, a false witness who pours out lies, and a person who stirs up conflict in the community.”

Introduction

Many people think of God as loving and merciful, which He is. However, the Bible also teaches that there are things God hates—things that go against His nature and bring destruction to our lives and relationships. Proverbs 6:16-19 lists seven things that are detestable to the Lord. These sins are not just individual acts but patterns of behavior that damage society, relationships, and spiritual integrity. Today, we will examine these seven sins and learn how to avoid them.

I. The Seven Things God Hates

  1. Haughty Eyes (Pride)

Pride is the root of many sins. It is an attitude that elevates oneself above others and even above God. Pride led to Satan’s fall (Isaiah 14:12-15) and can lead us to destruction (Proverbs 16:18). God calls us to humility, knowing that He gives grace to the humble (James 4:6).

  2. A Lying Tongue

God hates lying because He is a God of truth (John 14:6). Lies deceive, destroy trust, and lead people astray. Satan is called the “father of lies” (John 8:44), and when we lie, we align ourselves with him instead of God. As believers, we must speak truthfully and with integrity (Ephesians 4:25).

  3. Hands That Shed Innocent Blood

This refers to acts of violence, oppression, and murder. God values life because He created every person in His image (Genesis 1:27). This sin extends beyond physical harm, Jesus taught that even hatred in the heart is like murder (Matthew 5:21-22). Instead of harming others, we are called to be peacemakers (Matthew 5:9).

  4. A Heart That Devises Wicked Schemes

Sin begins in the heart before it turns into action (Matthew 15:19). When someone constantly plots evil, whether through deception, manipulation, or injustice, it reveals a heart far from God. Instead of scheming, believers should seek to do good and pursue righteousness (Romans 12:21).

  5. Feet That Are Quick to Rush into Evil

This describes people who are eager to sin and follow temptation without hesitation. Proverbs 1:16 warns about those who are quick to do evil, but Romans 12:9 tells us to “hate what is evil and cling to what is good.” We must resist sin and pursue holiness (Hebrews 12:14).

  6. A False Witness Who Pours Out Lies

This is different from general lying because it specifically refers to false testimony, which can lead to injustice and suffering. Bearing false witness can ruin reputations and destroy lives. The ninth commandment warns against this (Exodus 20:16), and God calls us to be honest in all our dealings.

  7. A Person Who Stirs Up Conflict in the Community

God desires unity among His people (Psalm 133:1), but some intentionally cause division through gossip, slander, and strife. This is one of the most dangerous sins because it disrupts harmony in families, churches, and communities. Instead, we are called to be peacemakers and to love one another (John 13:34-35).

II. How to Avoid These Sins

  1. Walk in Humility: Pride is the root of many sins, but humility invites God’s grace (Philippians 2:3-4).
  2. Be Honest: Speak truthfully and avoid deception (Colossians 3:9).
  3. Value Life and Kindness: Seek to protect and uplift others instead of harming them (Micah 6:8).
  4. Guard Your Heart: Fill your heart with God’s Word to avoid evil thoughts and schemes (Psalm 119:11).
  5. Resist Temptation: Do not rush into sin, instead, flee from it (James 4:7).
  6. Practice Integrity: Be trustworthy and truthful in all situations (Proverbs 10:9).
  7. Promote Peace: Avoid gossip and division, and strive for unity (Romans 12:18).

Conclusion

God hates these seven sins because they destroy lives and dishonor Him. As believers, we must examine our hearts and remove anything that displeases Him. Let us choose humility over pride, truth over lies, kindness over harm, purity over wickedness, righteousness over evil, integrity over falsehood, and peace over division. May our lives reflect God’s character so that we may bring Him glory.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, we thank You for Your Word that corrects and guides us. Help us to hate what You hate and love what You love. Give us hearts that seek truth, righteousness, and peace. Fill us with Your Spirit so that we may walk in Your ways and bring glory to Your name. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
