The Rejected Stone Becomes the Cornerstone
Psalm 118:22-23
Text: “The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone, the Lord has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes.” — Psalm 118:22-23 (NIV)
Introduction
Rejection is something we all face in life—whether from people, opportunities, or even our own struggles. But Psalm 118:22-23 reminds us that God’s plan often turns rejection into something greater than we could imagine. This passage is a prophetic reference to Jesus Christ, the Messiah, who was rejected by the religious leaders but became the foundation of God’s kingdom.
1. The Rejection of the Stone
The psalmist speaks of a stone that the builders cast aside. In biblical times, builders carefully chose stones for construction, rejecting those that did not fit their plans. Similarly, Jesus was rejected by the religious authorities, who failed to recognize Him as the promised Savior.
Isaiah 53:3 tells us, “He was despised and rejected by mankind, a man of suffering, and familiar with pain.” Though Jesus was the Son of God, He was not accepted by those who were supposed to lead God’s people.
Application:
- Have you ever felt rejected—by friends, family, or society?
- Take comfort in knowing that Jesus Himself was rejected, yet God had a greater purpose for Him.
- Likewise, when we trust in God’s plan, He can use our rejection for His glory.
2. The Stone Becomes the Cornerstone
Despite being rejected, the stone in this passage does not remain discarded—it becomes the cornerstone. In ancient architecture, the cornerstone was the most important stone, providing stability to the entire building.
In Matthew 21:42, Jesus quotes this very psalm, revealing that He is the cornerstone of God’s kingdom. Though rejected, He became the foundation upon which salvation is built.
Application:
- What others reject, God can redeem.
- Perhaps you’ve faced setbacks or disappointments, but God can use those very things to establish something new in your life.
- If Jesus is our cornerstone, we can build our lives on Him with confidence, knowing He will never fail us.
Conclusion
Psalm 118:22-23 teaches us that rejection is not the end of the story. Just as Jesus, the rejected stone, became the cornerstone, God can take our struggles and use them for something greater.
Closing Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for turning rejection into redemption. Help us to trust You when we face challenges, knowing that You have a greater plan. May we build our lives on Christ, our Cornerstone, and rejoice in the marvelous things You have done. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
