The Power of Agreement in Prayer

Matthew 18:19-20

Key Scripture:

“Again, truly I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything they ask for, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven. For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.” - Matthew 18:19-20

Introduction:

Prayer is one of the greatest gifts God has given us, and in this passage, Jesus reveals the power of praying in agreement. He teaches that when believers come together in unity, their prayers are powerful and effective because He is present among them.

Many of us pray alone, but Jesus reminds us that corporate prayer and agreement in faith bring divine intervention. Today, we will explore:

  1. The Power of Agreement in Prayer
  2. The Presence of Jesus in Our Gathering
  3. How We Can Apply This in Our Lives

1. The Power of Agreement in Prayer

Jesus says, “If two of you agree about anything they ask for, it will be done.” This shows that God honors unity in prayer.

  • Agreement in prayer aligns our hearts with God’s will - When believers pray together in faith, they stand in unity with God’s purposes.
  • Faith-filled agreement invites divine intervention - In Acts 12:5, the church prayed together for Peter’s release from prison, and God miraculously answered.
  • There is strength in numbers - Deuteronomy 32:30 says, “One can chase a thousand, and two can put ten thousand to flight.” When we stand together, our prayers are more powerful.

Application: Do you have a prayer partner or a group where you can pray in agreement?

2. The Presence of Jesus in Our Gathering

Jesus promises, “Where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.” This means:

  • God’s presence is not limited to large gatherings - Even in small groups, Jesus is there.
  • His presence brings power, peace, and direction - When we pray together, He leads and moves in ways we cannot see.
  • Gathering in His name means seeking His will - Agreement in prayer is not about selfish requests but about aligning with God’s purposes.

Application: When we gather, do we truly seek Jesus’ presence, or are we just going through motions?

3. How We Can Apply This in Our Lives

  • Pray with others regularly - Find a prayer group, family member, or friend to pray with in agreement.
  • Believe in the power of corporate prayer - When facing challenges, do not pray alone—ask others to stand with you in faith.
  • Trust in Jesus’ presence - Whether in a small or large group, believe that Jesus is present when you gather in His name.

Conclusion:

Jesus teaches us that praying in agreement releases God’s power, and that His presence is with those who gather in His name. Let us make prayer in unity a regular part of our lives, trusting that when we agree in faith, God moves powerfully.

Reflection Questions:

  1. Who can you pray with in agreement this week?
  2. How can you be more intentional about gathering with others in prayer?
  3. Do you truly believe in the power of Jesus’ presence when you pray with others?

Closing Prayer:

Lord, we thank You for the promise that when we pray in agreement, You hear and answer us. Help us to seek unity in prayer, trust in Your presence, and stand together in faith. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
