The Names of God — Discovering His Character

Proverbs 18:10

Main Text:
“The name of the Lord is a fortified tower, the righteous run to it and are safe.”
— Proverbs 18:10 (NIV)

Introduction: What’s in a Name?

In the Bible, names are never random. A name reveals identity, character, and destiny. When God reveals His names in Scripture, He’s not just introducing Himself — He’s inviting us to know Him personally.

Each name of God is like a facet on a diamond. When you turn it, you see a different brilliance of who He is.

Let’s explore some of the most powerful names of God — and what they mean for our everyday lives.

1. Jehovah Jireh - “The Lord Will Provide”

📖 Genesis 22:14 - Abraham named the mountain “The Lord Will Provide” after God provided a ram in place of his son Isaac.

When you’re staring down a need — financial, emotional, physical — remember, He’s Jehovah Jireh. He sees the need before you even ask, and He already has the provision on the way.

Application: Trust His timing. His provision may not be early, but it’s always on time.

2. Jehovah Rapha - “The Lord Who Heals”

📖 Exodus 15:26 - “I am the Lord who heals you.”

Whether it’s a broken heart, a broken body, or a broken past — God is still in the healing business. He may use doctors, prayers, or time, but His name reminds us: healing is in His nature.

Application: Bring your wounds to God — physical, mental, spiritual — and expect Him to move.

3. Jehovah Shalom - “The Lord Is Peace”

📖 Judges 6:24 - Gideon built an altar and called it “The Lord is Peace.”

In a world full of noise, fear, and chaos, God doesn’t just give peace — He is peace. This name was revealed to Gideon when he was hiding in fear. Sound familiar?

Application: When anxiety strikes, don’t just look for calm — run to Jehovah Shalom.

4. El Shaddai - “God Almighty”

📖 Genesis 17:1 - God said to Abraham, “I am God Almighty, walk before me faithfully and be blameless.”

This is the name of a God who is not limited by our circumstances. He can do the impossible. When we feel weak, El Shaddai is more than enough.

Application: Don’t measure your future by your strength — measure it by His.

5. Jehovah Nissi - “The Lord Is My Banner”

📖 Exodus 17:15 - Moses built an altar and called it “The Lord is my Banner” after Israel defeated the Amalekites.

A banner in battle was a symbol of identity and victory. When you feel attacked or overwhelmed, remember — Jehovah Nissi is the One who fights for you.

Application: Stop trying to win your battles alone. Let God take the lead.

6. Jehovah Rohi - “The Lord Is My Shepherd”

📖 Psalm 23:1 - “The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.”

This name reminds us that God doesn’t just direct traffic from heaven — He walks with us, guides us, protects us, and provides for us like a good Shepherd.

Application: Lean into His guidance. You don’t have to figure it all out alone.

7. Yahweh - “I Am Who I Am”

📖 Exodus 3:14 - “God said to Moses, ‘I AM WHO I AM.’”

This is God’s personal, covenant name. It means He is self-existent, unchanging, and eternal. He doesn’t need permission to be God. He is.

Application: When everything else is uncertain, trust the God who never changes.

Closing Challenge

You might be facing fear — run to Jehovah Shalom.

You may feel weak — trust El Shaddai.

Whatever you face, there’s a name of God that reveals His power over your situation.

So here’s the question:
Which name of God do you need to hold onto this week?
