The Name Above Every Name

Philippians 2:10-11

Scripture: Philippians 2:10-11 (NIV) - “That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

Introduction

The name of Jesus carries power, authority, and ultimate victory. In Philippians 2, Paul describes Jesus’ humility, obedience, and exaltation. These verses declare that one day, every being—whether in heaven, on earth, or under the earth—will recognize that Jesus Christ is Lord. This truth has profound implications for how we live today.

1. The Exaltation of Jesus

Earlier in Philippians 2, Paul describes how Jesus humbled Himself by taking on human form and dying on the cross (Philippians 2:5-8). Because of His obedience, “God exalted Him to the highest place and gave Him the name that is above every name.”

  • Jesus humbled Himself, but God exalted Him. His resurrection and ascension prove His victory over sin and death.
  • His name is above every name. No earthly ruler, spiritual power, or false god can compare to Jesus.

2. Every Knee Will Bow

Paul states that every knee—in heaven, on earth, and under the earth—will bow at the name of Jesus. This signifies complete submission to His authority.

  • In heaven: The angels and saints already worship Jesus.
  • On earth: Some willingly bow now, but others will be forced to recognize His Lordship in the future.
  • Under the earth: Even demons and those who reject Him will acknowledge His authority.

Whether willingly or unwillingly, every person will one day bow before Jesus. The question is not if, but when.

3. Every Tongue Will Confess

Paul continues, saying that “every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.” This is the ultimate acknowledgment of Jesus’ divine authority.

  • For believers, this is our joy. We confess Jesus as Lord now and experience His salvation (Romans 10:9).
  • For unbelievers, this will be unavoidable. Even those who reject Him today will one day have no choice but to acknowledge His Lordship.

4. Living in Light of This Truth

Since we know that Jesus is exalted and that every knee will bow before Him, how should we live?

  • Submit to Christ now. Instead of waiting until judgment, we should willingly surrender our lives to Him today.
  • Proclaim His name. Share the gospel so that more people will come to know Him before it is too late.
  • Live for God’s glory. Everything Jesus did was for the glory of God the Father. Our lives should reflect the same purpose.

Conclusion

Philippians 2:10-11 reminds us that Jesus is not just a teacher, prophet, or good man—He is Lord of all. One day, all creation will recognize His authority. As believers, we bow before Him now in worship, joyfully declaring that Jesus Christ is Lord.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, we thank You for the name of Jesus, the name above every name. Help us to bow before Him in worship and proclaim His Lordship to the world. May our lives bring glory to You as we live in obedience to Your will. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
