The Great Exchange

2 Corinthians 5:21

Scripture: 2 Corinthians 5:21

“God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” — 2 Corinthians 5:21 (NIV)

Introduction The gospel is often described as “The Great Exchange”—a divine trade where Jesus took our sin upon Himself and, in return, gave us His righteousness. This is the most powerful and life-changing truth in all of Scripture.

Imagine standing before a judge, guilty of countless crimes, yet someone else steps in and takes your punishment so that you can go free. That is exactly what Jesus did for us on the cross.

Three Aspects of the Great Exchange:

  1. Jesus Took Our Sin Upon Himself
  2. We Receive His Righteousness
  3. We Are Transformed to Live for Him

1. Jesus Took Our Sin Upon Himself

Paul says, “God made him who had no sin to be sin for us.”

  • Jesus was sinless—He never disobeyed God (Hebrews 4:15).
  • On the cross, He became sin for us, bearing our punishment (Isaiah 53:5).
  • This means that every lie, every failure, every sinful thought was placed on Jesus.

At Calvary, Jesus cried, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” (Matthew 27:46). In that moment, He experienced the separation from God that we deserved.

2. We Receive His Righteousness

The verse continues: “So that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”

  • Jesus didn’t just take away our sin—He gave us His righteousness.
  • We are no longer seen as sinners but as holy and blameless in God’s sight (Colossians 1:22).
  • This is not because of anything we have done, but because of what Christ has done.

This means that when God looks at us, He no longer sees our past—He sees Christ’s perfection!

3. We Are Transformed to Live for Him

Since we have been given this new righteousness, we are called to live differently.

  • We are no longer slaves to sin but new creations in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17).
  • We should pursue holiness—not to earn salvation, but because we have already been made righteous.
  • This is why Paul says, “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me.” (Galatians 2:20).

Our lives should reflect gratitude for what Jesus has done, obedience to His Word, and love for others.

Application: How Should We Respond?

  1. Accept the Exchange - Salvation is a gift. Have you placed your faith in Jesus?
  2. Live in the Freedom of Righteousness - Stop carrying guilt, Jesus has already paid for your sin.
  3. Share the Message of the Great Exchange - Tell others about what Christ has done.

Conclusion

The Great Exchange is the greatest act of love in history: Jesus took our sin, and in return, He gave us His righteousness. This changes everything—how we see ourselves, how we live, and how we share the gospel with others.

Are you walking in the reality of this exchange today?

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the incredible gift of salvation. Thank You that Jesus took our sin and gave us His righteousness. Help us to live in this truth, free from guilt and full of joy. May we share this good news with others and glorify You in all we do. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
