Stand Still and See God’s Salvation
Exodus 14:13-14
Text: Exodus 14:13-14 (NIV) — “Moses answered the people, ‘Do not be afraid. Stand firm, and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never see again. The Lord will fight for you, you need only to be still.’”
Introduction:
The Israelites were trapped between the Red Sea and Pharaoh’s advancing army. Panic set in, and they began to doubt God. But Moses’ response in Exodus 14:13-14 offers a powerful lesson about faith, courage, and God’s deliverance. These verses remind us that when we face overwhelming situations, God calls us to trust Him and watch His salvation.
1. Do Not Be Afraid
- The first thing Moses tells the people is to let go of fear. Fear paralyzes faith and causes us to forget God’s past faithfulness. It clouds our judgment and hinders our ability to trust God.
- Point: Fear often blinds us from seeing God’s power and provision. When we are consumed by fear, we lose sight of God's ability to work on our behalf.
- Example: Peter walking on water—when he looked at the storm, fear made him sink (Matthew 14:30). He took his eyes off Jesus and focused on the waves, and his faith faltered.
Faith and fear cannot coexist. Choose faith over fear.
Application: What are you fearing today? Are you facing a challenging situation that seems insurmountable? Release your fear to God and trust in His sovereignty. He is in control, even when things seem chaotic and uncertain.
2. Stand Firm and See God’s Deliverance
- Moses instructed the Israelites to stand firm and watch God’s salvation unfold. They were not to fight or run but to trust in God’s power to deliver them. Their role was to stand in faith and witness His mighty works.
- Point: Standing firm means holding onto God’s promises even when the situation looks hopeless. It means refusing to give in to doubt or despair, and instead, trusting that God will come through.
- Illustration: David stood firm before Goliath, trusting God to give him victory (1 Samuel 17:45-47). He didn't rely on his own strength or abilities, but on God's power to defeat the giant.
When you stand in faith, God moves on your behalf.
Application: Are you standing on God’s promises, or are you trying to fix things in your own strength? Are you relying on your own resources and abilities, or are you trusting God to work on your behalf? Trust that God is fighting for you, even when you can't see it.
3. Be Still and Let God Fight for You
- God told the Israelites they only needed to be still because He would fight the battle for them. Their responsibility was not to strive and struggle, but to surrender and trust.
- Point: Stillness doesn’t mean inactivity, it means a posture of trust and surrender. It means letting go of our need to control and allowing God to take over.
- Example: Jehoshaphat won a battle by sending out worshipers ahead of the army, trusting God to fight (2 Chronicles 20:17-22). He recognized that the battle belonged to the Lord, and his role was to worship and trust.
When you surrender your battles to God, He brings victory.
Application: Stop striving and fighting battles that belong to God. Are you carrying burdens that you were never meant to carry? Surrender them to God, and let Him fight for you. Worship, pray, and watch Him work.
Conclusion:
Exodus 14:13-14 is a reminder that God is the ultimate deliverer. When we face impossible situations, we are called to reject fear, stand firm in faith, and trust in God’s ability to fight for us. Our role is not to strive and struggle, but to trust and obey.
- Challenge: What battle are you facing today? What fear is gripping your heart? What situation seems insurmountable? Surrender it to God and trust Him to bring the victory. Let go of your need to control, and allow Him to work on your behalf.
- Encouragement: The same God who parted the Red Sea is with you today. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. His power has not diminished, and His love for you has not wavered.
Closing Verse: Psalm 46:10 — “Be still, and know that I am God.”
Prayer:
Lord, thank You for being our deliverer. Help us to reject fear, stand firm in faith, and trust You to fight our battles. We surrender our fears, our anxieties, and our struggles to You today. We choose to be still and know that You are God. Amen.
