Righteousness Through Faith in Christ

Philippians 3:9

Scripture: Philippians 3:9 (NIV) - “And be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ—the righteousness that comes from God on the basis of faith.”

Introduction

Many people believe that being good, following religious rules, or doing good works can make them right with God. But Paul reminds us in Philippians 3:9 that true righteousness does not come from our own efforts. Instead, it is given to us by God through faith in Jesus Christ.

This verse is at the heart of the gospel: We are not saved by our works but by grace through faith (Ephesians 2:8-9). Let’s explore what it means to be found in Christ and to receive righteousness through faith.

1. Not My Own Righteousness

Paul makes it clear that he does not rely on “a righteousness of my own that comes from the law.” Before his conversion, Paul was a Pharisee who strictly followed the law (Philippians 3:4-6). But he realized that no amount of rule-keeping could make him right with God.

  • Human righteousness is not enough. Isaiah 64:6 says our righteous acts are like filthy rags before God.
  • Following religious laws cannot save us. The law shows us our sin, but it cannot make us righteous (Romans 3:20).

Paul had to let go of self-righteousness and rely completely on Christ. We must do the same.

2. Righteousness Through Faith in Christ

True righteousness comes “through faith in Christ.” This means:

  • It is a gift, not something we earn. Romans 3:22 says righteousness is given through faith in Jesus to all who believe.
  • It is based on Christ’s work, not ours. Jesus lived a sinless life and took our punishment on the cross so that we could be declared righteous (2 Corinthians 5:21).
  • Faith means trusting in Jesus alone. We must stop relying on ourselves and put our full confidence in what Christ has done.

3. Righteousness That Comes From God

Paul emphasizes that righteousness “comes from God on the basis of faith.” This means:

  • It is God’s work, not ours. He justifies us through His grace (Romans 5:1).
  • It is permanent. Once we are clothed in Christ’s righteousness, we are secure in Him (Romans 8:1).
  • It transforms us. When we truly understand that we are righteous in Christ, we live differently—not to earn salvation, but out of gratitude for God’s grace.

4. How Should We Respond?

Since we are made righteous through faith, we should:

  • Reject self-righteousness. We must humble ourselves and acknowledge that only Jesus can make us right with God.
  • Put our full faith in Christ. Trust in His finished work on the cross, not our own efforts.
  • Live in gratitude and obedience. Our righteousness is a gift, and our response should be a life that honors God.

Conclusion

Philippians 3:9 reminds us that our righteousness is not based on works but on faith in Christ. This is the heart of the gospel—Jesus did what we could never do, and through faith in Him, we are made right with God. Let us trust in His righteousness, not our own, and live in the joy of His grace.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of righteousness through faith in Jesus Christ. Help us to trust in Him alone, not in our own works. May we live in gratitude for Your grace and reflect Your love in our lives. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
