Rejoice in the Lord Always

Philippians 4:4

Scripture: Philippians 4:4 (NIV) - “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!”

Introduction

Joy is something everyone desires, but many struggle to find lasting joy. The world often ties happiness to circumstances—when things go well, we feel happy, when they don’t, we feel discouraged. However, Paul commands believers to “Rejoice in the Lord always.” What makes this statement even more powerful is that Paul wrote it while in prison.

How can we have joy always? The key is found in the phrase “in the Lord.” True joy is not based on external circumstances but on our relationship with Christ.

1. The Command to Rejoice

Paul does not simply suggest rejoicing, he commands it—twice! This means that joy is not just an emotion but a choice.

  • Joy is a decision, not just a feeling. Even in difficult times, we can choose to rejoice by focusing on God’s goodness.
  • It is a continuous action. Paul says “always,” meaning we should rejoice not just when life is easy but in every situation.
  • It is for every believer. This command applies to all Christians, not just those with naturally cheerful personalities.

2. The Source of Our Joy

Paul does not say, “Rejoice in your circumstances,” but rather, “Rejoice in the Lord.” This shows us that our joy comes from Christ, not from external things.

  • Rejoice in His salvation. Our sins are forgiven, and we have eternal life (Luke 10:20).
  • Rejoice in His presence. No matter what we face, Jesus is with us (Matthew 28:20).
  • Rejoice in His promises. God is faithful, and His plans for us are good (Romans 8:28).

3. Rejoicing Even in Difficult Times

Paul was imprisoned when he wrote this letter, yet he still found joy in the Lord. This teaches us that joy is possible even in hardships.

  • Joy is not the absence of suffering but the presence of Christ. We can rejoice because God is working in our trials (James 1:2-3).
  • Joy is an act of faith. Even when we don’t understand, we trust that God is in control (Habakkuk 3:17-18).
  • Joy is our testimony. When believers rejoice in suffering, it points others to Christ (Acts 16:25).

4. How to Cultivate a Life of Joy

  • Focus on God, not problems. Keep your mind on things above (Colossians 3:2).
  • Practice gratitude. Thank God in all circumstances (1 Thessalonians 5:18).
  • Stay in His presence. Joy is found where God is (Psalm 16:11).
  • Encourage others. Sharing joy strengthens the church (Hebrews 10:24-25).

Conclusion

Philippians 4:4 reminds us that joy is not dependent on circumstances but on our relationship with Christ. No matter what we face, we can always rejoice in the Lord. Let us choose joy daily, trusting in God’s goodness and faithfulness.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the joy we have in You. Help us to rejoice always, no matter our circumstances. Strengthen our faith and remind us of Your presence and promises. May our joy be a testimony of Your goodness to the world. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
