Our True Citizenship in Heaven
Philippians 3:20-21
Scripture: Philippians 3:20-21 (NIV) - “But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body.”
Introduction
People take great pride in their nationality, culture, and earthly citizenship. But as believers, Paul reminds us that our true citizenship is not of this world—it is in heaven. This truth shapes how we live now and fills us with hope for the future.
1. Our Citizenship is in Heaven
Paul contrasts believers with those who set their minds on earthly things (Philippians 3:19). Instead of living for temporary pleasures, we are called to live as citizens of heaven.
- Our identity is in Christ. Just as a citizen of a country follows its laws and customs, we live by the values of God’s kingdom (Colossians 3:1-2).
- We are ambassadors for Christ. We represent His kingdom on earth (2 Corinthians 5:20).
- We do not belong to this world. Jesus said His followers are not of this world but are set apart for God’s purposes (John 17:14-16).
Since our home is in heaven, our priorities, values, and actions should reflect that reality.
2. We Await Our Savior, Jesus Christ
Paul reminds us that we are eagerly waiting for Jesus to return.
- This world is temporary. No matter how difficult life gets, we have hope because Christ will return to make all things right (John 14:1-3).
- Our hope is in Jesus. We are not waiting for political leaders, wealth, or success to save us—our Savior is Jesus Christ.
- We live with anticipation. Just as a traveler longs to return home, we should eagerly desire to be with Christ.
3. The Promise of Transformation
Paul speaks of an incredible future: Jesus will transform our lowly bodies to be like His glorious body.
- Our current bodies are weak and temporary. We face sickness, aging, and death, but this is not our final state (2 Corinthians 4:16-18).
- Jesus has the power to transform us. Just as He rose in glory, we will also be raised and given new, eternal bodies (1 Corinthians 15:42-44).
- This gives us hope and encouragement. No matter what we suffer now, we know a glorious future awaits us with Christ.
4. How Should We Live as Heavenly Citizens?
- Keep our eyes on Jesus. Focus on eternal things, not worldly distractions (Hebrews 12:2).
- Live in holiness. Our lives should reflect our heavenly identity (1 Peter 1:15-16).
- Share the gospel. Invite others to become citizens of God’s kingdom through faith in Christ (Matthew 28:19-20).
- Stay faithful until the end. No matter the trials, we press on with the hope of heaven in our hearts (Revelation 2:10).
Conclusion
Philippians 3:20-21 reminds us that we are not of this world—our citizenship is in heaven. We eagerly await our Savior, who will transform us into His likeness. This truth should shape how we live now, with faith, hope, and expectation of our eternal home with Christ.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for the promise that our true citizenship is in heaven. Help us to live as ambassadors of Your kingdom, with our eyes fixed on Jesus. Strengthen our faith as we await His return, and fill us with hope for the transformation that is to come. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
