New Mercies Every Morning

Lamentations 3:22-23

Key Text:

“It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.” - Lamentations 3:22-23

Introduction

The book of Lamentations was written by the prophet Jeremiah during a time of great sorrow. Jerusalem had been destroyed, the people were suffering, and it seemed like hope was lost. Yet, in the middle of this book of lament, Jeremiah declares one of the most powerful truths in Text: God’s mercies never fail, and His faithfulness is great.

This passage reminds us that no matter how dark our situation may seem, God’s mercy renews us daily, His compassion sustains us, and His faithfulness remains unshaken.

1. The Lord’s Mercies Preserve Us

“It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed…”

  • Mercy means we do not get the punishment we deserve. Because of sin, we deserve judgment, but God’s mercy sustains us.
  • Romans 6:23 - “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
  • Psalm 103:10 - “He hath not dealt with us after our sins, nor rewarded us according to our iniquities.”

If it were not for God’s mercy, we would be lost. But every day, He gives us another chance, another breath, another opportunity to turn to Him.

2. God’s Compassion Never Fails

“Because his compassions fail not.”

  • Compassion means God cares deeply for us. He is not a distant or harsh God, He is full of love and kindness.
  • Psalm 86:15 - “But thou, O Lord, art a God full of compassion, and gracious, longsuffering, and plenteous in mercy and truth.”
  • Isaiah 49:15 - “Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? Yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee.”

Even when we fail, even when we doubt, God’s compassion does not run out.

3. New Mercies Every Morning

“They are new every morning…”

  • God’s mercies are not leftovers from yesterday—they are fresh every day.
  • Each morning is a reminder that God has given us a new start.
  • Isaiah 43:19 - “Behold, I will do a new thing, now it shall spring forth, shall ye not know it?”

No matter what yesterday looked like, today is a fresh opportunity to receive God’s grace, walk in His love, and trust in His plan.

4. The Great Faithfulness of God

“Great is thy faithfulness.”

  • Faithfulness means God never changes, never fails, and never breaks His promises.
  • Numbers 23:19 - “God is not a man, that he should lie, neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it?”
  • Hebrews 13:8 - “Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.”

Even when we are faithless, God remains faithful. He does not abandon us, He stands by His word.

Conclusion

Lamentations 3:22-23 is a powerful reminder that:

  1. God’s mercy keeps us from destruction.
  2. His compassion never fails, no matter our circumstances.
  3. His mercies are new every morning, offering us a fresh start.
  4. His faithfulness is great and unchanging.

No matter what you are going through, God’s mercy is available today. Will you trust in His faithfulness and receive His new mercies?
