Living Generously for God’s Glory
1 Timothy 6:18-19
Scripture: 1 Timothy 6:18-19 (NIV)
“Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life.”
Introduction
In 1 Timothy 6:18-19, Paul gives us a powerful exhortation to the rich—though his words apply to all of us. Paul reminds us that wealth is not for selfish indulgence but for doing good and serving others, ultimately storing up eternal treasure. This passage calls us to live generously, focusing on what truly matters: serving God and others, with a heart that is willing to share. Living generously is not just a financial matter but a matter of the heart.

The Call to Good Deeds and Generosity (1 Timothy 6:18)
- Command to Do Good
- Paul begins with a command to “do good.” Good deeds are essential for the believer. Jesus said in Matthew 5:16, “Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” Our good deeds should reflect God’s love and demonstrate our faith.
- Being Rich in Good Deeds
- Paul urges us to be “rich in good deeds.” Just as some are rich in material wealth, we should be rich in kindness, service, and generosity. The quality of our good deeds should overflow, showing the generosity of God.
- Generosity and Willingness to Share
- Paul emphasizes that we should be generous and “willing to share.” Generosity is not just about meeting needs but about delighting in giving. It’s about being willing to part with our resources, not out of obligation but out of love and joy. Acts 20:35 reminds us that “it is more blessed to give than to receive.”
Reflection: Are we living with a generous heart, willing to share what we have, or do we hold onto our resources out of fear or selfishness?

Laying Up Eternal Treasure (1 Timothy 6:19)
- Storing Up Treasure in Heaven
- Paul explains that when we live generously, we “lay up treasure for [ourselves] as a firm foundation for the coming age.” Jesus taught in Matthew 6:19-20 to “store up for yourselves treasures in heaven.” The treasures we accumulate on earth are temporary, but our acts of generosity have eternal value.
- A Firm Foundation for the Coming Age
- The wealth of this world is fleeting, but living generously lays a firm foundation for the age to come. The treasures we store in heaven—our good deeds, lives impacted, and service to God—are eternal and unshakable.
- Taking Hold of the True Life
- Paul says that generosity helps us “take hold of the life that is truly life.” The world promises fulfillment through wealth and success, but only God gives true life. This life is found in Christ, in living for His purposes, and serving others. Living generously frees us from materialism and enables us to experience the abundant life in Christ.

The Heart Behind Generosity
- The Heart of Gratitude
- Generosity flows from a heart of gratitude. When we recognize how much God has blessed us, we are compelled to give. 2 Corinthians 9:11 says, “You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion.” Our giving should reflect the abundance of God’s blessings in our lives.
- The Heart of Contentment
- Generosity also comes from contentment. In 1 Timothy 6:6-8, Paul says, “Godliness with contentment is great gain… if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that.” When we are content with what God has given us, we are free to share it with others.
- The Heart of Faith
- Generosity is an act of faith. Proverbs 11:25 tells us, “A generous person will prosper, whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.” When we give, we trust that God will continue to provide for us. This deepens our dependence on God and strengthens our faith.

Conclusion
1 Timothy 6:18-19 calls us to live generously, not just with money but with our time, talents, and resources. Generosity reflects our faith in God and His provision. By doing good, being rich in good deeds, and being willing to share, we lay up treasures in heaven and experience the true life found in Christ. As we live with a heart of gratitude, contentment, and faith, we reflect God’s generosity and bring glory to His name.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for the abundance You have provided in our lives. Help us to live generously, to be rich in good deeds, and to be willing to share what You have entrusted to us. Teach us to store up treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy. May our lives reflect Your generosity, and may we take hold of the true life found in giving and serving others. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
