Like a Tree Planted by the Waters

Jeremiah 17:8

Key Text:

“For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the river, and shall not see when heat cometh, but her leaf shall be green, and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit.” - Jeremiah 17:8

Introduction

This verse gives a beautiful image of a person who trusts in the Lord—like a tree planted by the water. It remains strong, fruitful, and unshaken, even in times of difficulty. In contrast, the previous verse (Jeremiah 17:7) says, “Blessed is the man that trusteth in the Lord, and whose hope the Lord is.” This tells us that true stability and fruitfulness come from trusting in God.

1. The Tree Planted by the Waters - A Life Anchored in God

A tree needs water to thrive. A tree planted by the waters has an unlimited supply of nourishment. Likewise, when we are rooted in God, He provides everything we need to grow and flourish.

  • Psalm 1:3 - “And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season, his leaf also shall not wither, and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.”
  • John 7:38 - Jesus says, “He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.”

When we trust in God, He becomes our source of strength, peace, and provision.

2. Unshaken by Adversity

Jeremiah says that this tree “shall not see when heat cometh.” This means that even when trials, hardships, and challenges come, the person who trusts in God will not be destroyed.

  • Isaiah 41:10 - “Fear thou not, for I am with thee: be not dismayed, for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee, yea, I will help thee, yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.”
  • 2 Corinthians 4:8-9 - “We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed, we are perplexed, but not in despair, persecuted, but not forsaken, cast down, but not destroyed.”

Even when life gets tough, those who are rooted in God will remain strong.

3. Always Fruitful, Even in Drought

The verse says, “Neither shall cease from yielding fruit.” This means that even in difficult times, those who trust in God will continue to bear spiritual fruit.

  • Galatians 5:22-23 - The fruits of the Spirit—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control—will continue to grow in us.
  • John 15:5 - Jesus says, “He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.”

Even when life feels dry, God enables us to remain fruitful and faithful.

4. How to Stay Planted in God

To be like this tree, we must:

  1. Trust in God completely - Surrender every part of your life to Him.
  2. Stay connected to His Word - Read and meditate on Scripture daily.
  3. Pray and seek Him continually - Build a strong relationship with God.
  4. Surround yourself with godly influences - Fellowship with believers who encourage your faith.
  5. Remain faithful, even in trials - Don’t let hardships shake your trust in God.

Conclusion

Jeremiah 17:8 teaches us that those who trust in God will be like trees planted by the waters—strong, unshaken, and always fruitful. No matter what difficulties arise, if we stay rooted in Him, we will not wither or fail. Instead, we will continue to grow and bear fruit for His glory.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for being our source of strength and life. Help us to trust in You fully and remain deeply rooted in Your Word. No matter what trials come, let us stand firm and continue to bear fruit for Your kingdom. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
